Greg, that is one of the most solid analyses I have ever seen on this topic. I'd like to congratulate you with multiple applause points, but one is all I have. Thank you, sir.

Edit, another beef I have, go figure, theres another one eh? Why is SI carrying this kind of a poll? What good does it do? It gives off a negative image of a handful of teams. What's there to gain? I think it was bullshit of SI to do this and it shows how lame they are in their own creative department for new material.

SI does a poll every week. MLB, NBA, NFL for the most part. Questions like, "Who is the most over rated player?" "Under rated?" "Who is the toughest player?" "Which would like to play for most/least?" and so on.

It just so happens this one was a least liked question. I doubt the editors at SI really care what kind of an image they portray a franchise.

I know this and that's not what I'm asking, with all due respect. I think it's garbage. I asked what good does it do, not what they do every week. I don't really care. I think demoralizing people and towns, etc to get get hits is weak and unwarranted.

It rubs me the wrong way, that's all. I would urge them to be more creative instead of trying to find the negatives.

To answer the question I asked. I would hope that perhaps Green Bay folks who can change that image, are aware of this and do something about it.

SI ran a poll that ended up calling out GB on something that most of us hate having to admit, that unless you're from WI, GB isn't the most appealing place in the U.S.

"Zero2Cool" wrote:

What does that have to do with it? Vikings, Bears, Cowboys, Packers, Steelers, whomever, that holds no bearing at all to what I'm saying. Which is this, to use a poll of this nature like the other ones as well is weak and lazy. SI is not a small time business and for them to stoop to this for attention hits, its just weak in my opinion. I don't care if the Packers were the top 3 unfavored teams or any team. It's the QUESTION's nature that gets to me combined with the motive behind asking them. You have an oppurtunity to inquire opinions on nearly 300 NFL players and THAT's what you come up with? Seriously?

Fair enough. I thought I may have misunderstood you. To focus on the positive is always a better route to go. Unfortunately the media and people in general fail to do so more often than not.
As I mentioned before, my intent was not to drag GB or any city/franchise thru the muck but to pose the question- what should management do, if anything, to overcome the perception.

Reggie White was a very special player. In some ways he was even more special than Brett Favre. He was so big and so charismatic, and I think the fact that he was black added a lot to his appeal to other black players who came here because of him. He was somebody who they could relate to.

It was all very nice how it worked out with Reggie, but if we expect that to happen again, we are going to be waiting a long, lone time. There is no player in the NFL right now who has that kind of appeal, and even if there was, he would be unlikely to become a free agent, as his team would pay him big bucks to stay put.

Some people in this thread have mentioned that the Packers have a solid organization. That is the best way to overcome this negative first impression that many players have of Green Bay. And I don't think the poll takes that into account. I'm assuming that most of the players who were polled have not researched all 32 NFL cities and franchises. But I think that when players enter free agency and take a closer look at things, many of them are impressed by the organization in Green Bay and how well the players are treated here. That probably goes a long way toward making up for the disadvantages of living in a very cold and relatively small city.

In a league with a salary cap, I don't think money is going to make up for the deficit. If the Packers pay well above market value for players, they are going to get themselves into a hole. The keys are to win and to be a solid organization that treats its players well.

Green Bay's positive is also a negative in the unknowing publics eye. Brett didn't even know about Green Bay before being traded here. Now what, he loves Green Bay. Charles Woodson didn't want to come here either, this was the last place on his choice map, now he loves it here.

I'm not offended by the poll results because I know if and when people come here, they will love it. If you love football, THIS IS THE TOWN to be in, period.

This goes back to something I said awhile ago. Ted needs players like Woodson to communicate to other players who are potentially coming to Green Bay. To educate them the type of town this is.

The whole negativity sells thing has always bothered me. Something I pointed out to the staff was the day following a loss, the site's hit count boomed. After a win, crickets could be heard. Personally, that's wrong in my view. And more to the negativity sells thing, that's why I can't stand watching the news. They want to find some 'scoop' and its almost always about what bad happened to who. That's not news, that's tragedy. and you know what makes it worse? Us, because us as a whole glue our damn attention to it.

Yep. This site has been a virtual ghost town since our defeat of the 49ers. But if we lose to the Ravens, it'll be hoppin' all week.

Zero:

I used to buy men's health, and they'd have polls about cities with the most pollution, highest crime rate, or fattest chicks, IN ADDITION TO some more pleasant complimentary ones. Again, would you be commenting on the virtues of the golden rule if the chiefs were substitued for the packers in this survey?

I honestly don't think the intentions are as vindictive as you perceive them to be, or that a free agent will see this and not come to GB as a result.

As I said before, I've lived in GB for 7 months, loved it. i did a lot of biking to Kewaunee, or up Nicolet Drive (gorgeous!!!), loved UWGB and the trails near Deckner ave, getting CCQ to go at Krolls...but could also understand why others would not be too fond.

No thanks on the big name free agents. How worthless would Haynesworth or Canty be right now. I actually kind of like our current FA system of staying away from the big contract guys but getting the cheaper guys who still have a decent upside like Woodson and Pickett. Even Chillar was looking like our best LB this year before he got hurt.

I am especially glad we didn't break the bank for anybody this past offseason considering none of us knew how well our current players would be in Capers defense.

I think usually SI Polls get both sides...

By that I mean usually if they were to ask, "WHICH NFL TEAM WOULD YOU LEAST LIKE TO PLAY FOR?" usually they would also ask "WHICH NFL TEAM WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO PLAY FOR?"

Any body know if they also asked that and what was the result?
