Report: Packers dropping Brian Brohm
Posted by Josh Alper on September 5, 2009 4:41 PM ET
Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times and National Football Post is reporting that the Packers will place quarterback Brian Brohm on waivers Saturday.

That leaves Matt Flynn secure, for the moment anyway, as the backup quarterback in Green Bay and leaves the Packers with nothing to show for the 56th overall pick in the 2008 draft. Brohm was beaten out by Flynn in each of the last two years and struggled mightily in preseason while Flynn was on the sidelines with a shoulder injury.

Brohm completed 39 of 62 passes for 300 yards during preseason action, but the key numbers are really three and zero. He threw three picks and no touchdowns which leads to a 54.5 passer rating and, it seems, no job.

Biggs reports that the Packers may be in the market for a third quarterback to take Brohm's place on the roster and mentions Luke McCown of the Buccaneers as a possibility.

What? Impossible, because our GM could never admit a mistake with a 2nd rounder, this fast!

An unfortunate turn of events. He was considered by many to be the safest QB pick in that draft and he simply didn't have the mentality for the NFL. I'm hoping he clears waivers but I doubt he will. Someone will take a shot at him and use him for their #3 QB. Hell, maybe even NE.

Can the Packers bring him back to the practice squad even though he was on the 53 man roster all last season?

Sorry guys, I had put that in the "cuts" thread, when I should have made it a thread all it's own. I'm still learning the ins and outs here, sue me! :thumbleft:

They should keep him around for another year, he seems like hes slowly getting more comfortable. Its not like he hasn't shown any improvement at all either.

Unless there is a signifigantly better option out there, don't waste the 2nd rounder and give it one more year. At the same time I wonder if he would get picked up on waivers.

Yeah, of course. That's why you cut your 3rd string QB because you ACTUALLY want to win, THIS season. lol 🙂

Pretty genius gamble by Ted. Brohm's play has been bad, although he has shown improvement. If someone wants to put him on an active roster, go for it - although it will be unlikely if they actually saw him play.

If he makes it through waviers, we've got a PS QB that knows our system and can continue to develop, freeing up another spot for a valuable player.

Or perhaps Ted has made a promise to Brohm (or his agent) that he'll re-sign/activate him to the 53-man roster again once the injury situation at RB/CB improves? Hence for the time being they keep Brohm on the PS?

buckeyepackfan (17-Nov) : Jaire and Evans Williams are both ACTIVE! Good news.
Martha Careful (17-Nov) : The badgers really need to change the whole offensive scheme. No draws no screens plus the quarterback is marginal
Cheesey (17-Nov) : If the Badgers had a decent QB, they would have won. The guy can't hit a wide open receiver
Martha Careful (17-Nov) : chop block
