I know it is conventional wisdom to attribute injuries to the random vagaries of (bad) luck, but the Packers have been beset with so many injuries the past few years that I can't help but wondering about the strength and conditioning staff. A lot of the trendy, newfangled methods of athletic training are gradually being shown not to be as effective at preparing bodies to be resilient to the rigors of contact sports as the more old-fashioned emphasis on raw strength, power and agility. I remember the Packers brought in a new strength coach a few years ago (can't remember his name) who was known for his supposedly innovative training modalities, which de-emphasized strength and concentrated more on high reps, and then the team had a spate of hamstring injuries the following two seasons. That coach is no longer with the team. I'd be curious to see what kind of training program the Packers have been on the past couple of seasons. People like Clay Matthews sure do seem to have some muscular imbalances in their legs.

Yes, I believe that was the man. Look how effective his techniques have been for the Rams.

Football players need to be strong, fast, and tough. Flexibility is also a plus (see: Ryan, Matt). Endurance is of far lower importance in the game of football, but that was the primary focus of Gullickson's training style.

No, I was saying that Gullickson seems to leave a trail of broken bodies wherever he goes. In my opinion, his methods are counterproductive and dangerous.

There is an awful lot of bullshit out there in the physical training field these days. People find the oldies-but-goodies boring, especially since they are damn hard work, so they tend to go for all the latest fads. Plus it's a lot more lucrative to charge for some new exercise variant you've invented yourself, which is why we have so many glitzy trickets and programs out there these days. (The ShakeWeight? Squats on a medicine ball . . . WTF?)

My university has perhaps the oldest exercise physiology program in the country, so a lot of exercise research takes place here. Interestingly, they keep finding out that the old techniques are the best. The old strongmen of the late 19th and early 20th centuries knew what they were doing. There is just no substitute for the compound lifts -- squats, deadlifts, presses, rows, dips, etc. -- for building strong, durable human beings.

It was supposed to be kind of a throwback program. In Gullickson's first two years--2006 and 2007--there were relatively few injuries, and Gullickson won an award for Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year. Then in 2008, they had a bunch of injuries and Gullickson got canned along with several other assistant coaches. The guy who replaced him, Dave Redding, has a similar approach, based on using a lot of free weights.

From what you wrote, I can see how teams might be convinced to use training programs that are less than ideal, although I still tend to lean more toward luck as the biggest factor. Also, I wonder if some GM's are more willing to roll the dice on players who are somewhat injury prone.

Some GM's are more than willing to roll the dice on injury prone players and potential trouble makers. Usually they do that to get them over the top as they feel the reward outweighs the risk.

I think the turf played on holds value in injuries as well. Probably more so than I think.

Hopefully Green can come back 100% healthy next year. I had high hopes for him to be ready and help us with our Super Bowl run late in the year. Now I guess we won't have seen much of him at all. Maybe Neal can do that-I keep hoping. We could use his pass rush even more.
Why is Jerry Kramer not in the Hall of Fame?

packerfanoutwest (7h) : ok now for the Pro Bowl Game in Hawaii
TheKanataThrilla (8h) : If I was Philly I would try to end it instead of punting it
Mucky Tundra (8h) : VICTORY! We have (moral) victory!
TheKanataThrilla (8h) : Hey they mentioned that we 3-peted
Mucky Tundra (9h) : seems to me the 49ers should have traded Aiyuk when they had the chance
Mucky Tundra (9h) : if the Eagles get it down to the 1, do they Tush Push or give it to Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (9h) : 49ers have a money problem if they want to sign their QB
Mucky Tundra (9h) : Wait for real? Didn't he just get an extension two years ago?
Zero2Cool (9h) : 49ers gonna trade Deebo. Interesting
TheKanataThrilla (9h) : Replays always never seem to show the holdings
TheKanataThrilla (9h) : Great throw by Hurts
Mucky Tundra (9h) : Where Carter falls prey to bad off the field influences (to be clear, not saying he'd clip someone though)
Mucky Tundra (9h) : Had Carter not gone to Philly were they already had a lot of old college friends, he ends up in a similar spot to Aaron Hernandez
Mucky Tundra (9h) : I think some of his coaches told scouts to stay away
Mucky Tundra (9h) : the street racing incident+conditioning and motivation problems
beast (9h) : Then Carter was street racing, where the other car crashed and people died... and other teams were scared to pick Carter for some reason
beast (9h) : I think the Saints traded up, giving their next year 1st to the Eagles, and then they sucked and Eagles got the 10th overall pick
packerfanoutwest (9h) : wtf Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (9h) : Getting Carter and Nolan Smith in the first round in 2023 was pretty darn good
Mucky Tundra (9h) : for some reason i'm thinking of a draft where the Eagles where in the mid 20s and a top player fell all the way to them
TheKanataThrilla (9h) : I think so. I would need to look it up. Think it may have been Carolina's pick.
Mucky Tundra (9h) : i'm not sure who i'm thinking of now
Mucky Tundra (9h) : oh fuck me i messed that up
Zero2Cool (9h) : Jordan Davis was 13th overall
Zero2Cool (9h) : Carter was 9th overall
Zero2Cool (9h) : Eagles had 15th and 10th selections, moved to 13 and 9 to get Davis and Carter back to back
Zero2Cool (9h) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (10h) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (10h) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (10h) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (10h) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
packerfanoutwest (10h) : another crap halftime show
TheKanataThrilla (10h) : I think it is over, but then I think of Atlanta and want Philly to go in with the same intensity in the second half
Mucky Tundra (10h) : And with a Pass Rush that might as well be on a milk cartoon and no Jaire
Martha Careful (10h) : I cant help but feel good about how well the Packers D played in Philly during the playoffs
Mucky Tundra (10h) : this game is over
Mucky Tundra (10h) : This might be the kill shot here
Mucky Tundra (10h) : oh that's such a bad penalty for KC after getting the 3rd down stop
TheKanataThrilla (10h) : Philly DL has come to play
TheKanataThrilla (10h) : Ceoper DeJean with the INT scored...bad memories of draft night
Mucky Tundra (10h) : ok scratch that
Mucky Tundra (11h) : Game feels like last years Super Bowl: 49ers started off in control, moved the ball well but didn't have much of a lead to show for it
TheKanataThrilla (11h) : KC jumped and they call it on Eagles. WTF refs
TheKanataThrilla (11h) : If he was offside why did you let him pop the QB?
TheKanataThrilla (11h) : I like that Eagles are controlling time of possession so far.
Mucky Tundra (11h) : If the Eagles are going to win, this is how they do it: jump all over the Chiefs and don't let it turn into a close one
TheKanataThrilla (11h) : Bad throw created that penalty.
TheKanataThrilla (11h) : Amazed Philly got that hit to the helmet call.
