The Packers are letting go of last year's leading rusher. Alex Green, who led Green Bay in rushing last year, has been released, Jason Wilde of ESPN reports. That means the Packers are comfortable with veteran James Starks as the only holdover in the backfield, joining rookies Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin. DuJuan Harris, who...

Freaky.

The Vince Young thing didn't stun me, but this did. I guess they like Starks AND Franklin (and KUHN) better!

I guess with the Harris injury they want another runner which is good for Starks because he isn't a great pass catcher or pass blocker (not that Green was but he seemed to get the hang of the two from what I saw in preseason).

He was a bit of a surprise as well. Keeping 3 RB (and Kuhn) doesn't make a whole lot of sense knowing that players get injured and RB more than most.

Green was not a great prospect to begin with really..

He had the "measurables" but that offense in Hawaii... My grandma could run through those. At no point did he ever hone the skills needed to navigate through an NFL line of scrimmage.

I did however, like him more than Starks whose vision is as bad or worse.

They both have had injury issues.

BUT, he was solid in pass pro. Starks hasn't been and Franklin sure as hell isn't. That's why this surprised me.

Green could make people miss in the open field, but I guess we don't run screens or traps on this team. When we do they look ugly.

Another odd thing about Green given the pink slip is he seems to have aptitude for returning kickoffs since it plays more to his strengths (open field, make a guy miss with a cut) and hides his weaknesses (reading blocks, no need to instantly digest a play and make a move)

And now the New York Jets have claimed him on waivers...

With Harrell & Green now (and Favre formerly), NYJ = wanabee Green Bay East?

The New York Daily News opines that Jets running Kahlil Bell could be the next to go after the news that Gang Green has claimed Alex Green off waivers from the Green Bay Packers, per agent Michael Hoffman.

With Mike Goodson suspended four games, Green will add depth behind Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell in Jets coach Rex Ryan's backfield.
