Probably.

For me, it was great seeing all the different kinds of throws he can make. He’s got every single pitch. He can throw with velocity, he can throw with touch, he can throw with a great trajectory down the field. It was cool to see not just throwing on air in shorts in a camp in the summertime in Louisiana.

This might be what excites me most about Love. When I watch his highlights, I see him launching the ball like a cannon, yet the ball settling like silk into the hands of his receivers (or defensive backs). It's an incredible sight to behold. My most frequent complaint about Aaron Rodgers over the years has been his all-too-frequent lack of touch, particularly in short-yardage situations. His receivers take a lot of heat for all the drops, but far too often I've felt that Rodgers blasted the ball at them much harder than was warranted, relying on his impressive arm strength to keep it out of the hands of defenders. This has no doubt helped to keep his interception numbers low, but I think it's come at the cost of failing to move the chains in key moments, forcing an increasingly exhausted defense back on the field.

I know people will tell me that receivers need to adapt to their quarterback and not the other way around, but I disagree. Football is a team sport, and adaptation should be a two-way street. Maybe with Love at the helm we'll see a change in focus away from brute strength in short- to medium-yardage situations and toward a more finesse style that's easier for receivers to handle. I can see how this could simultaneously lead to more interceptions and keep more drives alive that under Rodgers might otherwise have stalled in various frustrating ways.

Hell, all Love has to do is be willing to give his dumpoff man or his man at the marker a shot (of which in LaFleur's system there will be plenty), and he's likely to extend more drives than Rodgers has in recent years.

By the way, "he's got every pitch" is most definitely a not-so-subtle comparison to Patrick Mahomes. It's clear Nagy is excited about Love. Now Love is obviously not going into a situation quite as ideal as the one Mahomes fell into, but a couple years down the road, there's no telling what this roster might look like.

Totally off topic, is Alex Smith ever going to play another down in this league?

I fully get that a big part of MM's system is to extend the play and look for the big shots and when you had a talented and deep group of WRs, you could do that all day, every day and be very successful.

But as the WR talents weren't being restocked (extremely important in MM's scheme with all those ISO routes, maybe less important in this scheme) you need to adjust.

I knew Rodgers was overlooking the short routes, but I guess I never knew to what extent, until a game against the Seahawks, when they quite literally, ignored the RB receiving routes unless they were over 5 yards. The RB was left alone most of the time in his routes, and with the exception of the play that looked specifically designed to get Jomes the ball on a pass (which did score a TD), the short passes were completely ignored even if uncovered. In other words, they're basically playing 10 on 11 on pass plays with a RB receiving route, that's unacceptable.

Also last year, might have shown that while Rodgers can accurately throw a 50 yard bomb tightly through three defenders (or whatever super hard throw you want to think of). Rodgers sometimes struggles to throw a 10 yard swing pass to an uncovered short route, because he hasn't practice it enough (I've heard it's feet that are off and in bad position when he tries to do that). So you can do the toughest things, but also need to work on the simple things, especially since it's now a staple of the new scheme.

20 years is a big strong. Let's say 10 years. It could be 15 but I'll take 10.

Or maybe Thompson drafted Rodgers particularly because he reminded him of Favre in some ways.

For a perfect example of the silkiness of Love's passes, watch this video, especially the pass at 0:33:

At 1:50 they talk about Love running the hurry-up offense. At 2:10 he makes a really nice block on a handoff. And of course, the pass at 9:40 is simply jaw dropping.

By the way, although Utah State lost that game, their 31 points was the most any team scored against MSU that year.
