Yeah I think that's been my biggest disappointment, failure to change with the roster changes and not focusing on the smaller aspects enough.
I fully get that a big part of MM's system is to extend the play and look for the big shots and when you had a talented and deep group of WRs, you could do that all day, every day and be very successful.
But as the WR talents weren't being restocked (extremely important in MM's scheme with all those ISO routes, maybe less important in this scheme) you need to adjust.
I knew Rodgers was overlooking the short routes, but I guess I never knew to what extent, until a game against the Seahawks, when they quite literally, ignored the RB receiving routes unless they were over 5 yards. The RB was left alone most of the time in his routes, and with the exception of the play that looked specifically designed to get Jomes the ball on a pass (which did score a TD), the short passes were completely ignored even if uncovered. In other words, they're basically playing 10 on 11 on pass plays with a RB receiving route, that's unacceptable.
Also last year, might have shown that while Rodgers can accurately throw a 50 yard bomb tightly through three defenders (or whatever super hard throw you want to think of). Rodgers sometimes struggles to throw a 10 yard swing pass to an uncovered short route, because he hasn't practice it enough (I've heard it's feet that are off and in bad position when he tries to do that). So you can do the toughest things, but also need to work on the simple things, especially since it's now a staple of the new scheme.
