Interesting little find on the franchise tag, people keep saying $14 million for Flynn but it could be alot higher:(

Updating previous reports, the New Orleans Saints have named QB Drew Brees as an exclusive rights franchise player. He is set to earn the average of the top five quarterbacks in the NFL but his exact salary won't be known until the free agency period is over. As of right now, that figure would be between $16 million and $17 million, although any deal involving Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning would likely change this amount.

Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Yep. There's just no way the Matt Flynn will be tagged. Almost no established analysts are giving that fan fantasy any credence anymore. Point to the Corey Williams situation all you want, but the situations just aren't comparable. Williams' cap hit was a tiny fraction of the hit the Packers would be facing after tagging Flynn. And Williams was a starter -- Flynn is a backup.

Interested to see what, if anything, happens to Flynn today. If they let him walk what will the draft pick compensation be?

Reports say the Packers did not use their franchise tag. That's a shocker to some of you who felt so adamant the Packers were going to tag Matt Flynn and trade him huh?

Some of us level headed folk who've paid attention to Ted Thompson and the Packers salary cap tried telling you it wasn't gonna happen. BUT YOU NO LISTEN! :)

I was hoping to be wrong, I must admit. It would have been sweet to get a 2nd or something better for Matt Flynn. Although, as we said a few times, the risk of being butt up against the salary cap (which btw has not yet been disclosed) was not worth it.

Theoretically, we could still sign him and trade him.

The Packers did the right thing Monday, allowing the NFL deadline for franchising players to pass, apparently without using theirs on Flynn or anyone else. The difference between tagging Flynn and letting him depart via free agency simply wasn't worth the trouble.

[...]

As we've discussed many times, the Packers would have had to clear $14 million in cap space to temporarily house Flynn, even if it were only for a day after the March 13 opening of free agency. They also would have had to be certain, by Monday, that a trade market would develop — and the NFL officially prohibits trade discussions during this time period. Flynn almost certainly would have signed the tender, meaning the Packers would have been stuck paying a backup quarterback $14 million if they couldn't find a trade partner.

"Kevin Seifert" wrote:

That's something I don't think I ever saw mentioned on this site: Even to house Flynn for a few days in the event of the pipe dream tag-n-trade coming to fruition, the Packers would have been forced to cut several players to free up cap room. As Seifert points out , the most the Packers would have netted would have been a 2nd-round pick, and given that they may receive a 3rd-round compensatory pick for Flynn, that would have represented a net gain of perhaps 60 draft slots. That is not much of a reward for such a huge risk. Ted Thompson made the right poker move as usual.

Sounds like Wells may be as good as gone, too.

Packers fans sure are an optimistic bunch. It's kind of charming in its own way, but it means we keep plowing this same ground every offseason.

Rourke, I think some of us did say the Packers didn't have the cap room and would have to release guys. I know I've said it a few times, but I've piped my opinion so many times on this subject, it was probably lost with the other ramblings, lol.

You've also stated the risk factor that several of us have mentioned as well.

Anyhow, it does suck the Packers couldn't tag an trade Matt Flynn, but I'm really interested (for curiosity sake) to see where he lands. The sexy pick is Dolphins, but I could see him with the Browns or Seahawks just the same.
