I agree pass rush is a top concern. I'm not sure offensive line is. As far as Finley goes, I wouldn't undersell his impact in the offense.

Reading Seifert's NFC North blog today, it turns out Finley played the highest number of stats among receivers (more than Jennings even). He didn't put up huge numbers, but I'd wager that his presence on the field (particularly in the red zone) opened things up for other guys. There was so much hype surrounding Finley before the season. Whether he lived up to it or not is another matter -- though most of us would agree he hasn't. But he has to be accounted for by defenses. Rodgers and Co. were very dangerous last year without him. This year, Rodgers throws 45 TDs and 4,600+ yards. Can't credit it all to Finley, I know. But ask yourself what was different this year? Do you think a [mostly] healthy James Starks was the difference? Was it merely Rodgers' progression? Might it have something to do with Finley -- a matchup nigthmare -- being out there for 83% of the offensive snaps? I can't quantify it, but methinks it true.

I watched Nelson come from last year a decent WR to a deep threat who runs perfect routes (a la Greg Jennings) and gets separation from defenders. The year before, his routes were good, but nothing to write home about. He also wasn't getting the separation he got this year.

Last year's numbers - 45-582 for a 12.9 average and 2 TDs
This year's numbers - 68-1263 for a 18.6 average and 15 TDs

Night and day in every way. The year before, he was a decent possession guy. This year, deep threat. Opened up a lot of stuff underneath.

It could even be argued that Nelson's emergence helped Finley's numbers.

This season I didn't hear announcers talk about any player other than Finley being double teamed. I can distinctly remember situations where the commentary that accompanied the replay mentioned Finley having defenders covering high and low. This absolutely opens up things for the other playmakers.

*edit: lastly, I'll add that Finley is a first down machine. He may not have put up the best numbers for the Pack, but 80% of his catches were for first downs. Impressive. And now back to your regularly scheduled thread about Matt Flynn.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

zombieslayer, how do you know the routes of the Packers offense? Did you steal a playbook? I want the playbook so I can use it in Madden!!

Well a Seahawks site writer looks at the limited video of Flynn.

It is interesting getting an outsiders praise and criticism.

A Look at Matt Flynn Part I

A Look AT Matt Flynn Part II

A Look At Matt Flynn Part III

A Look at Matt Flynn Part IV

The good:

Matt Flynn uses the whole field.
Matt Flynn is accurate.
Matt Flynn can read a defense better than most yound QB's
Matt Flynn is not afraid to stay in the pocket or take a hit to make a throw.
Matt Flynn is a wise scrambler.

The bad:

Flynn pats the ball while in the pocket (nervous habit to break)
Flynn lacks arm strength for some throws (long throws have too much arc).
In over and under coverage Flynn doesn't see or read the over coverage very well.

"Should we really see Flynn excelling as an indictment on Rodgers, as some have joked? Not really.
Rodgers is so far beyond Flynn, and such a significantly more complete quarterback, the comparison just seems silly, but they do share certain skills, Flynn can match Rodgers' accuracy on short throws, and he is equally skilled in timing, isolating matchups and throwing wide receivers open.

Sure, it helps both quarterbacks that the Packers receivers are so good at creating separation, but you still need a quarterback who can identify and exploit these matchups, or even create them with the right audible or correctly placed ball, which is something Flynn and Rodgers can do, but someone like Tarvaris Jackson can not."

If you don't want to read it all go to the bottom of part 4 and read the conclusions.

It could be premature to write off Flynn as gone.

This is exactly the kind of scouting I was encouraging Kevin to get into in another thread. Yes, it doesn't pay anything at first, but in this day of search engines and syndication, you never know who will read what you write.

In one of the comments on the article, the author says in no uncertain terms that no team will be foolish enough to give up a first-round pick for Flynn. Another commenter points out the interesting fact that three of the touchdowns in the Lions game came on very long runs after the catch, two of which were completed behind the line of scrimmage.

It appears from one of his articles that he has access to the All-22 footage that is normally reserved for coaches and front office staff. Makes me wonder if he is an actual scout for the Seahawks. He makes it clear he is not on the staff of the front office.

Here is a nice article on All 22, coaches tape, game film or whatever you want to call it.

Good article on game tape from Wall Street Journal

Note in the article from 2 months ago that Charlie Casserly a former GM and analyst for CBS sports had to take an hour and a half train ride one a week to NFL headquarters to have access to the tape.

The writer of the Flynn article had access to the All 22 from the regular season final against the Lions in less than a week from the game.
