The way I interpreted what Finland wrote is that no team picks the BPA every single time. But I suppose the way he wrote it was a bit ambiguous.

I'd agree, there's probably not many, if any team that drafts solely on the best player available. I'd suspect that a vast majority of picks by successful teams are taking the best player available.

32. Green Bay Packers -- Stefen Wisniewski, OG/C, Penn State
GM Ted Thompson is famous for trading away Brett Favre three years ago. What gets loss is that Thompson has a remarkable record of accomplishment drafting in the first round. Five of his six first round picks started in Super Bowl XLV. Like Bryan Bulaga last season, Wisniewski isnt flashy, but he finishes blocks in the run game and is assignment sound.

I don't know the answer to this. I do wonder, has Mel Kiper Jr ever predicted correctly a Ted Thompson first round pick?

Kiper: Green Bay is lucky Aaron Rodgers was still standing at the end of last season. The Packers can't take that chance again. Upgrading the offensive line is a huge priority, and although Bulaga has had his off days, he's an impressive talent who moves well and has long arms that disrupt pass-rushers.

That's weird. Most of the scouting reports I read say Bulaga fell because his arms were short.

No team ever drafts true BPA. Teams vary between reaching for the highest need, and picking BPA from a wider set of needs. Thompson does the latter.

Of course, in hindsight, I prefer our pick. Even at that time I prefered that pick.

I do believe that we're one of the teams that comes closest to this, though. Just like the Lions, the Pats etc.

Nice catch there, +1. I remember the talk about his arms being shorter than the standard for left tackles. The only possible excuse I can think of for Mel is that he was expecting Bulaga to play right tackle or guard, and maybe his arms exceed the standard for those positions. But that's just a guess. I thought the short arm stuff was silly anyway.

I think Thompson probably stays as true to BPA as possible but there are obviously specific things to consider with just about any draft that might cause him to bank off course a bit.

When the decision was made to switch to the 3-4 it is not a coincidence that Ted Thompson went with Raji and made an almost unprecidented move up to grab Mathews. Now for what they were doing Mathews obviously was the BPA at the time but the Packers happened to need a great player there. Looking back now the cost was nothing for what they got.

I see Thompson putting a pool of positions at center stage and takes the BPA out of what is available in those positions UNLESS there is just not anybody there that is worthy of the pick OR some player is mysteriously still there they have much higher on the list.

What it looks like to me this year is the pool of positions opens up to just about ALL the positions with a position or two maybe leading the way by a slim margin depending on what happens to some of the FA's. It's the reverse of his first year here when we needed players everywhere. Now, he can take just about anybody at any position that looks like they are going to be good football players.

Probably the first year since his first Ted Thompson can just get the list as right as possible and pick whatever names comes up when it's their turn.

What I like about Uncle Ted is the gems he finds late in the second round like Jennings and Collins which none of us swinging dicks ever heard of. I even said WTF on the Jordy Nelson pick and what a player he is turning out to be. I'm not closing the door on Neal either. And last year when he moved ahead of the Bears for Burnett was really good. Too bad Morgan got hurt.

I view the biggest need for the Packers in this draft, and it is vital, is to find a return man, and I don't care which round that comes in. A little utility player that could play a little 3rd down back or slot receiver. I cringed every time Tramon dropped back for a punt return.
