What I like about Uncle Ted is the gems he finds late in the second round like Jennings and Collins which none of us swinging dicks ever heard of. I even said WTF on the Jordy Nelson pick and what a player he is turning out to be. I'm not closing the door on Neal either. And last year when he moved ahead of the Bears for Burnett was really good. Too bad Morgan got hurt.

I view the biggest need for the Packers in this draft, and it is vital, is to find a return man, and I don't care which round that comes in. A little utility player that could play a little 3rd down back or slot receiver. I cringed every time Tramon dropped back for a punt return.

Yeah, whoever it is in the first round genearlly has been in a discussion and is a familiar name but you never know where Ted's going from there. The thing with Ted and the KR position is they have to be able to play a position for him to move on one. Ted Thompson doesn't like to take up a roster spot on a guy that can only return kicks.

32. Green Bay Packers -- Stefen Wisniewski, OG/C, Penn State
GM Ted Thompson is famous for trading away Brett Favre three years ago. What gets lost is that Thompson has a remarkable record of accomplishment drafting in the first round. Five of his six first round picks started in Super Bowl XLV. Like Bryan Bulaga last season, Wisniewski isnt flashy, but he finishes blocks in the run game and is assignment sound.

rotoworld's take:

The Green Bay Press-Gazette considers outside linebacker to be the Packers' biggest need area entering the offseason.
Projected starter Brad Jones lost his job to Frank Zombo early in the year, and the Packers mixed and matched opposite Clay Matthews the rest of the way. The Press-Gazette considers it "all but a given" that they'll draft a new potential starter. With the 32nd pick, possibilities include Justin Houston (Georgia), Ryan Kerrigan (Purdue), and Jabaal Sheard (Pitt).

I think that Raji over Crabtree at that time was a good example.

Ted even hinted as much, I think, but I can't find the article.

Of course, in hindsight, I prefer our pick. Even at that time I prefered that pick.

I do believe that we're one of the teams that comes closest to this, though. Just like the Lions, the Pats etc.

One of the things Ted Thompson thinks make a player the best available is different from some other GMs. He takes character into account, which would have pushed Crabtree down the list a bit.

He will take need into account. If he has two players equally ranked, he will take the player we need more.

where have I heard that before? ... oh ya last year ... and how many OLBs did we pick up ... oh ya none; not even in the 7th round.

To be honest Im not sure we go for a OLB in the first 3 rounds ... we have decent guys and some good competition.

Im a bit more worried about CB and OL (still).

I wouldnt mind the pick thou ...

for once we should have our Dline really solid.

Eh, CB is a more long term need than OLB right now. We have Tramon who is young and emerging as one of the elite corners in the league and we have a rookie in Shields who looks capable of being a number 2. Woodson still has a few good years left in him and we do have some young guys that could possibly mature into decent corners (Lee and Underwood) if they can stay healthy.

At OLB we have Clay and not a whole lot else. We could really use another quality outside linebacker as then we could put Jones, Walden, and Zombo into backup roles which I would be very comfortable with them in.

Offensive line is our greatest need. Hands down.

In order of needs I would go:

OL
OLB
CB

Pretty much any other position and you're talking about depth or competition. That's of course assuming we don't lose someone to retirement, injury, or free agency.

Lets assume that Jenkins leaves in free agency.

If Clay gets hurt (God forbid), we lose our 2 best (and only) past rushers from this year.

Dom Capers is creative and will find ways to create pressure (psycho, Woodson, etc). But you can only do so much creatively without hurting the overall D.

That's why I would like to have an OLB somewhere in the first couple rounds.

The thing about OLB in the 3-4 is it one of the most difficult positions to evaluate talent with so few college teams asking these guys to do what they will have to be able to do at the next level.

Somehow Thompson knew that Mathews would be great but there may not be a player in this draft he feels good enough about to chance #32.

There will be a couple guys that get caught up in the wrong place with the way the draft falls so do you pass on a JJ Watt or a Pouncy projected to go higher for a Houston who maybe iffy?

I think Thompson will have to be VERY high on a particular OLB to take the chance in the first round over a couple guys sitting there that are going to be good pro's. With a year under his belt my guess is they feel pretty good about Zombo improving this 2nd year.

This would be where I see Thompson appying BPA. I could see him possibly swoop down in the 2nd for a player he likes. I don't see how 7 rookies can make the team anyhow.

Agreed, if we can't draft over players, we are spinning our wheels. I expect Ted Thompson knows this and will draft accordingly.
