The question I don't see being asked is why it took several days after the comment for him to be fired? If McCarthy or anyone else had a problem with it, why wasn't something said to him on the spot? This current administration has some of the most screwed up communication issues I've ever seen.

It's almost like Mike McCarthy planned to win the game, then make some comment back to the guy, but since he really DID lay an egg, he just fired the dude rather than having to look at him again. This whole situation is just F'n weird.

To me, this isn't about McCarthy as it is about the organization.

Frankly, I stopped listening to McCarthy's public comments a long time ago. Whatever the reason, I've realized he's not going to say anything that isn't Fleischerized, and Fleischerized ineptly, anymore; so I'm just going to chalk it up to "well, he doesn't do the press well and so long as he puts a good team on the field I'll deal with it by ignoring it. (And if he doesn't I'll criticise him as a field coach.)

But when management as a whole (be it Thompson, or McCarthy, or whoever makes the decisions about hiring/firing assistant maintenance peons) comes off over and over and over as inept publicly, then I worry.

I mean, if this is indeed an isolated case of a cancerous or idiot employee, an organization the size of the packers should be able to handle it without it becoming a media firestorm. I mean, we're talking about American sports media here -- the people who give us sideline reporting and ESPN suckups and know-nothings as the pinnacle of their profession. A halfway decent PR department should be able to have them for breakfast.

Companies in the entertainment biz, companies that live in the public eye, have to be PR-conscious. I get that. But they shouldn't be such PR fuckups.

And the best that can be said of all this -- not the worst, but the *best* -- is that the Packers are utter fuckups at PR.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Look. It is obvious the shouted something to the head coach of the organization that he works for. I do not believe for a moment that he shouted something encouraging.

The grounds keeper guy is a packer fan, that much is clear. You just needed to be on the live chat here last Sunday at the end of the game to know for a fact the chances were about zero that he was shouting encouragement.

I have a feeling the part time grounds keeper guy is an idiot. (Ala Bill Murray the grounds keeper in Caddy Shack.) You just do not shout at anyone you work with.

It is very simple... do your job. He was not hired as a cheerleader, or as a critic, so it does not matter what the fuck he yelled at him.

Now he has been given a career adjustment.... Justly I would think.

Would you go up to the biggest guy in your large corporation and say something derogatory? No way. This was BEFORE the Queens game, not after the Bucs game. We were still all true believers at that time.

Mike McCarthy* Will Have Your Job if You Mention Eggs in His Presence

Any talk of breakfast food will not be tolerated, apparently. Wood was promptly fired and escorted out of the stadium. The 53-year-old admitted that he cried, but as a testament to his loyalty to the Packers, he didn't blow off the game and take a long walk to clear his head. Instead, he went to the Stadium View bar to take in the festivities. (In retrospect, Wood might have been better off taking that long walk.)

The team later issued a statement on the matter: "The organization has standards of conduct that apply to all employees, full-time and part-time, in order to maintain a respectful workplace. Mr. Wood's supervisors determined he made an inappropriate comment, and he was relieved of his duties."

Meanwhile, Wood told the Journal Sentinel that "I will die in my grave knowing that I didn't say anything about laying an egg," which is something McCarthy won't be able to say about his tenure in Green Bay when it finally comes to an end.

* McCarthy, during a Friday radio appearance, said that "he did not fire anybody in the maintenance department." Maybe it was the other Mike McCarthy employed by the team.

I did my part. I bitched to the Packers this morning.

I'm keeping that number handy.

Still don't know what the exact comment was, but safe to say it was something that was disrespectful to say to the head coach.

McCarthy was shocked to hear the guy got fired. Knowing McCarthy, he likely wanted the guy's name so he could approach/talk to him.

Fields manager Allen Johnson and general manager Ted Thompson spoke to Mike Wood on day of termination.

If Mike McCarthy wanted to "just talk to him," then why doesn't he answer the question as to whether he "recommended" his firing? If I have nothing to hide, I don't say, "It was a one minute conversation."
Wood never mentioned speaking with TT, btw.

Well it better have been something pretty disrespectful or offensive.... otherwise Mike McCarthy better grow a little thicker skin than [strike]to fire[/strike] report someone over a petty comment.

They better release the comment and full details of this before it grows any further.. this proud franchise doesn't need this type of petty tom foolery.. if the facts warrant the termination.. clear the franchise.. or continue to take these types of lumps and dull up that once ultra polished shine that has been a part of the Packers tradition.

Sorry... 22 years of employment speaks volumes, so does releasing him on a comment.

I have personally seen long time employees become bitter, complaining, cancers, after 22 years on the job.

Especially in union jobs....

Union or non union, this guys facts/story does not add up.

We were saying the exact same things during a certain "fiasco".

Fair has nothing to do with anything.

The national media is going to couple the handling of this little dust up with how the Packers organization handled the last one.

Game?

Forget the game. This is a better story. The undoing of a head coach due to a petty retaliation against a 22 yr employee for making a comment, which

AT PRESENT

is the employee's version of the comment.

This MORON of a head coach simply needs to tell the media (presently local, in 24 hours national) what was said.

The SMART thing to do, if there is ANY GREY AREA as to the legitimacy of this termination, is to un-terminate the man...as in say, about 15 seconds after this story hit the papers.

OR

EXPLAIN it------

FAST.

None of this is happening.

Game?

What game?

Watch...just watch. Skip Bayliss, Chris Collingsworth, Rome is burning, yada yada yada

Yea, Bedard corrected himself. It was Ted Eisenreich, stadium manager, not Ted Thompson.

Zero2Cool (6h) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (6h) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (6h) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (6h) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (6h) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
packerfanoutwest (6h) : another crap halftime show
TheKanataThrilla (6h) : I think it is over, but then I think of Atlanta and want Philly to go in with the same intensity in the second half
Mucky Tundra (6h) : And with a Pass Rush that might as well be on a milk cartoon and no Jaire
Martha Careful (6h) : I cant help but feel good about how well the Packers D played in Philly during the playoffs
Mucky Tundra (6h) : this game is over
Mucky Tundra (6h) : This might be the kill shot here
Mucky Tundra (6h) : oh that's such a bad penalty for KC after getting the 3rd down stop
TheKanataThrilla (7h) : Philly DL has come to play
TheKanataThrilla (7h) : Ceoper DeJean with the INT scored...bad memories of draft night
Mucky Tundra (7h) : ok scratch that
Mucky Tundra (7h) : Game feels like last years Super Bowl: 49ers started off in control, moved the ball well but didn't have much of a lead to show for it
TheKanataThrilla (7h) : KC jumped and they call it on Eagles. WTF refs
TheKanataThrilla (7h) : If he was offside why did you let him pop the QB?
TheKanataThrilla (7h) : I like that Eagles are controlling time of possession so far.
Mucky Tundra (7h) : If the Eagles are going to win, this is how they do it: jump all over the Chiefs and don't let it turn into a close one
TheKanataThrilla (7h) : Bad throw created that penalty.
TheKanataThrilla (7h) : Amazed Philly got that hit to the helmet call.
