Zombieslayer, the official term for the stat is "passer rating," which is one of the reasons it's not a great measure of overall QB performance. I believe they should come up with a formula that accounts for both passing and rushing performance, but I'm not sure what it would look like, nor how it would weight rushing and passing.

The problem with that is that it directly hurts guys like Brett Favre and Ben R as they break sacks, then complete passes. What's the difference between someone breaking a sack and running for a first down and someone breaking a sack and throwing for a first down?

There will never be a perfect QB rating. Ever. I don't think the current system is as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I just think it's incomplete and it doesn't account for different eras. Like Starr had to deal with his WRs being clobbered 20 yards downfield. Favre still played in a time when QBs can be hit in the noggin. QBs 10 years from now may be playing with red jerseys. Who knows? That seems like the way it's headed.

Personally, I think Manning has been and and maybe still is one of the best with Brady. I don't know if his offensive line has ever been elite. Good at some times but awful this year. Yes, quite immobile but makes up for it with his quick release.

I'm not really sold on Brees and I actually like him. He's won one super bowl. So did Trent Dilfer. Bradshaw won 4. Brees puts up big numbers but is he actually one of the top three playing the game today?

Ryan belongs a couple notches down in my opinion.

I too would like to see some alternative stats proposed here. I think I'm smart enough to do it but too lazy.

Another guy that gets seemingly no respect is Elway, we all know it was Terrell Davis who won SB XXXII, but how can you not mention a guy who is 2-3 in superbowls, and 14-7 in the playoffs winning two thirds of his games, 4th all time behind Montana, Bradshaw and Brady in # of wins.

His playoff stats wont blow your socks off, but the win/loss record surely should. The guy played in 5 superbowls, the first 3 with absolutely terrible teams. He won 2 superbowls, which is more than Manning, Favre, Marino, etc etc etc.

Ditto for Aikman, hell JIM KELLY, the guy who lost 4 superbowls, has a better playoff record than Manning.

John Elway is No. 1 on my list for a number of reasons. This is getting into an all-time great list though, so I wont expand farther than that. He does get the respect though.

Based on projections now, I think Rodgers has a chance to surpass many people. Brees, on the other hand, does not in my opinion. He just turned 32 this year and I don't think he'll holdup physically as well as others. My main reasoning is that I don't think the Saints are going to be a perennial playoff team.

Yeah, there will probably never be a stat that can compare across the eras with all the rule changes that have helped the offense.

What would things look like if we used the current (or former) year's "averages" for completion percentage, touchdown percentage, etc?
