I wonder why Ed Reed is not in the mix? 8 interceptions in 10 games played.... Seems to me that he should at least be in the discussion.

Wake gets more sacks and more TfL than Matthews, so he is better at rushing the QB and run defense. Though Wake is not as good in run defense as his 12 TfL suggest (top 3 in the league), he is still very good.

Suggs is nearly as good a sacker as CM3, but much better in run defense.

I'm not saying CM3 is a LOT worse than them, I'm just saying that if I had to pick which player was better I'd edge toward Suggs or Wake. Maybe when CM3 has a chance to play a full season healthy he'll change my mind.

While millertime's post is very informative, this isn't defensive MVP, it's DPOY so I don't think a team's record has a lot to do with deciding the winner. It's like saying Rodgers wasn't good in '08 because our team was only 6-10.

I think a huge factor in deciding is the extent to which opposing teams go in order to stop hat player. I watch a lot of football and I don't see any other player in this discussion getting close to the amount of attention from opposing teams that Clay gets. That's why Clay deserves the award, in my opinion.

And there's a difference between having to account for and neutralize a player and trying to avoid a player. You can avoid a cover corner, but you can't avoid a any of these five guys. I think, all things being equal, last year's AP DPOY selection of Woodson over Revis shows you which route this award usually takes. You can avoid Asomugha, but Peppers? "Yeah, let's pretend he's not even there. That should work out well for us!" Sorry, but I can't buy that. Peppers played well but was often taken care of by one guy. Coaches gameplan on how to neutralize Matthews, and they get pretty darn creative. Sometimes it works. Most times it does not.

I trust the writers to pick the right guy more than I trust the players, coaches, and GMs. The football people often don't have the best perspective on the league as a whole. The writers are at least supposed to have that perspective. Not all of them do, but I think most of them at least give it a good effort. I think Clay will win the AP award anyway. He deserves it.

Zero, that's why it's a good thing it's a consensus vote and not chosen by one guy. I don't trust them all to get it right, but I (almost) trust that the consensus will be right.
