Every year this thread comes out early in the season and it's true that we haven't run the ball that great in the first six or seven games under McCarthy.
I have, however, run numbers on this in the past and found that the top scoring offenses all pass the ball extremely well and run it average and in many cases below average. We at least find a way to get the run game to respectable numbers and McCarthy will always stay at it because it's important when the weather turns.
The bottom line is we are a passing team and do the smart thing by putting the ball in Rodgers hands. You either set up the run with the pass or set up the pass with the run and we set up the run game with the pass.
When it gets cold and the ground gets hard and the players are freezing out there we will be running the ball and I expect we will see the same decent run numbers result from it.
Our run game gets dogged more than it should. By the end of the year we generally have better numbers than the other prolific passing teams in the league. When I ran these numbers last only NE made it in the top 10 in both passing and running and our overall numbers put us second or third. I think we were 3rd in passing and 14th in running.
My guess is we will be right back at about the same level this year. EVERY team and EVERY fan would love to see their offense kick butt in both but the reality of it is very few do.
SB winners traditionally end up in the top 10 scoring offenses and top 5 scoring defenses. Other than NO last year who just kept scoring points like the Energizer Bunny. Even with them their overall rushing numbers were only so-so.
