Running yards don't even matter. It is attempts. Attempting the running game is what keeps defenses honest and on their toes, doesn't matter if we rush for 3 or 5 per attempt. Do I want more? Sure, who doesn't, but for offense I don't believe it is critical.

to an extent, I agree with what you say warhawk, but someone else mentioned the team passing on 3rd and 2. I don't know if that's a function of lack of confidence in the run game, or a function of trying to pick it up with your best asset (pasing game).

Either way, it's important to have the ability to pick up 3rd and 2 running it, but I don't have the confidence in the team right now, and I'm not sure that Mike McCarthy does either.

Most teams will pass on 3rd and 2. The game has changed. The defenses will bring pressure in the gaps to stop the run and play tight on the short routes. Basically a "run blitz" to stack the run but bring pressure if it's pass.

I would look for pass on 3rd and 2 far more often than I would expect to see a run play not because of a lack of confidence in the run but more in what the defense is going to bring. Statistically I believe you would see this top heavy with the pass throughout the league.

Jackson gave us what we should expect from him..

Gets the yardage that is there to get most of the time.

Has better vision than Grant but also is a bit more tentative than Grant, wastes steps laterally.

Doesn't have as much explosive potential as Grant but probably gets a little more out of crowded holes.

He is what he is.. a decent NFL back but not a true #1 type runner..

To me, we have a blended (some power between the tackles runner with some decent vision) in Jackson.. a Bull type to hammer at the defense in Kuhn... we could use an edge type runner to mix in that can pressure the edges of the defense a bit more than we currently.. or even with Grant.

Split the carries among 3 or 4 runners and give the defense something different to think about in each.. I don't think we need a franchise runner type to add at this point.. more or less a guy to give us a different dimension to the running game and MM another toy to apply pressure to the defense.

I agree, and also the tentative thing is something that is correctable. I think we need to give Jackson more than 1 game before we bail on him just look at Grant's first 5 games last year.

I'm not going to get mad or anything if we give up on Jackson and go get someone but I just don't think we should even entertain giving up anything significant until Jackson at least gets more than 1 game.

Agreed Steve. I'd actually rather not pick someone up. Saints won the SB last year without a true #1 RB. They had 3 that split the carries.

I still want to see what Nance has to offer. I do think we need to screen more to Jackson and use Kuhn to soften up the D as he's usually not good for more than 5 yards, but he makes defenders sorry they tackled him.

The '96 season we had Levens and Bennett splitting the carries.

it's not an issue of splitting carries or having a feature back, the saints' top rusher last year had 793 yards, but he at least avg'd over 5 and demonstrated the ability and agility to pop one at any moment.

Bjack has been here 4 years? and yeah he's servicable, but have you ever felt that you can't wait for him to get in because he is a threat? To me, he seems like someone the D doesn't have to load up against out of respect...and that's my concern, does the team have anyone like that?

Jackson missed a few holes that i thought he could have had some nice gains on. A few times it looked like he could have bounced it outside and gained some yards.
Hopefully he will learn from the game films.

Of course...add #12, 85, 80, 89, and 87 to that, the problem is that all those numbers correspond to the passing game.

I get the "don't panic yet" sentiment, but at the same time, do Kuhn, Bjack, or any other rb options provide a significant threat to defenses right now?

I'm :horse: but I don't feel the team can depend so heavily on the pass all season long, and the current crop or some new blood need to start to produce something on the ground.
