Clifton Smith, not Desmond Howard. I believe he is better than 50 of our 53 at returning, but nearly a million a year for a guy with the fumbles and has had two concussions?

I thought Peprah looked good from what I seen of him. He seemed to the giver of some nice hits.

The difference between 800k and the minimum wage is so small that it's really not any kind of an issue.

Ahh... he is not a vested player.. so his minimum I believe is 325k... so he got about a million over the min for a two year deal... those aren't peanuts.

Sigh. Never made 88K/year in my life. And on my current salary scale it ... won't happen for a decade even if I somehow con a promotion to full professor.

All eight players on the Packers' practice squad signed minimum deals for $88,400, including tackle Breno Giacomini.

This line really caught my eye. What a comedown for a former fifth-round pick! Giacomini's base salaries have been as follows: $295,000 (2008), $385,000 (2009). The final two years of his rookie contract were supposed to look like this: $470,000 (2010), $555,000 (2011). The money he'll be making on the practice squad is barely half his signing bonus of $179,000! I hope he's been living well below his means, because he's taking a gigantic pay cut this year.

It's also amazing to me that a quarterback who had a career as amazing as Graham Harrell did can't seem to make an active squad. Ah, well. His loss is our gain. I think a year or two in McCarthy's quarterback school will do wonders for him.

By the way, how many of you know that Giacomini is Brazilian and fluent in Portuguese?

JS had an article on the 'Queens attempting to sign Giacomini. Guess he figures the $$ are just until he gets called up, either by GB or Minn. According to the article below, he's getting something > than the minimum salary.

Packers win battle for Giacomini

Vikings tried to attain released offensive tackle

Green Bay Ted Thompson appeared to be a bit agitated Sunday when he fielded questions about his 53-man roster.

Perhaps it was because the Green Bay Packers general manager had just come from battling the pesky Minnesota Vikings - who have seldom seen an ex-Packer they didn't like - over tackle Breno Giacomini.

And the tussle likely will continue between the two NFC North rivals.

Although Giacomini finally signed on to the Packers' practice squad Sunday afternoon, the Vikings have told him they will attempt to sign him to their 53-man roster as soon as a spot opens up, according to a source.

Since the Packers went all-out to retain Giacomini, they undoubtedly assured him that he will receive a swift promotion to their active roster at some point.

Soon after Giacomini went unclaimed by the 31 other National Football League teams, the Vikings came hard after the Packers' fifth-round draft choice in the 2008 draft.

Giacomini was set to sign with the Vikings for more money than the normal practice squad salary, and then the Packers came back into the picture.

While Thompson dealt with Giacomini's agent, Jason Chayut, offensive line coach James Campen gave his best sell job to his former pupil.

In the end, more money and at least some assurance of a roster promotion kept Giacomini with the Packers for the time being.

It's not a life or death matter. If the Packers felt comfortable that he would be an addition to the roster, don't you think they'd have made an offer? Obviously there was something there that gave them a red flag. Maybe the fumbles? Concussions? or they are crazy and think they have someone better on the roster already.

I wanted him on the team for several reasons, but it doesn't mean he deserved to be, nor did it mean we should throw a million dollars at him. I trust the Packers know more than I do.

I'm willing to bet his agent had a higher asking price to come to Green Bay than for Miami. Clifton spoke heavily about how he needed to do what was best for his family. I highly doubt moving cross country was viewed as a better decision, if he could stay within a hundred or whatever so miles from where they previously were.

To be fair, I have absolutely no knowledge of this guy's body of work. But I have a hard time calling him a "quality returner". All i've heard is injury and fumble problems. Not to mention that he got cut from his team in order for them to pick up one of our castoffs. I realize he made it to the pro bowl in 2008 but in 2009 his punt return stats got significantly worse. As far as rushing is concerned, in 2009 he had 4 attempts and 2 fumbles.

He may have been a slight upgrade over Tramon, Jennings, and Jackson. But a $1 million upgrade? Not a chance.

What's the problem with the 1 mil? It's an uncapped year, and it doesn't hurt us in any way. And even if there were a cap, the guy we'd cut would probably all but nullify that 1 mil anyway. Ok, let's say the guy we cut cost has a salary of 500k. Would you not improve our return game for 500k?

He had a 29.1 yard average with kickoffs last year. 10.1 average in punts. That's already an upgrade. He also missed games because of that dirty Dante hit, which caused a concussion. It doesn't mean he's concussion prone when you get one on a dirty hit like that. Those missed games are a part of the reason he didn't have any return TDs last year (he had 2 in 2008 though, one kickoff, one punt).

And he was in the Pro Bowl in 2008. Sounds like a pretty good resume to me.
