It's not about 'gaining yards' actually. It's about gaining FIRST downs and TOUCH downs.

And how much of his 'precious yards' were during junk time when the game was over?

#2 in rushing yards but #1 in running into his own players, going down when looked at, and #1 at pissing me off! RABBLE!

Don't get me started on him!

Ok, so lets look at last years performers in the 2009 season. Sorry Trom, they still don't document the number of times running into back of lineman.

NFL Rushing Stats 2009

All I have to say is that there are very few RBs in the entire league that I would even consider for removing Grant. The stat lines here show it, and marks upon a lot of the topics. Grant was 4th in 1st downs, and 5th in TDs, and the only RB in the top 10 without a fumble, all while being 7th in number of carries.

He can rant, but he can't have both. (Grant AND Colledge) :danceme:

Friggin' Colledge should be hung before he is shot.

We couldn't even run at the left side.

Go look it up, stats-wise. Even when we (stubbornly/ had to) tried to---

complete fail.

How did Ryan get his yards, then?

We were pretty good running to the right side.

Actually, the best in the NFL.

THAT tells you how much Colledge and the other salary crooks SUCKED on that left side.

Grant is a good back, but Peterson is great. I think the best talent of his generation by far. One of the best freshman college football players in history, if not the best. Fumbles aside, Minnesota won the division the last two years with Adrian Peterson.

Would they have won it with Ryan Grant?

Flip the two guys. How good is Adrian Peterson in Green Bay and how good is Ryan Grant in Minnesota?

Personally, I think Green Bay dominates the Vikings the last two years if the roles are reversed. This isn't a knock on Grant, but rather praise for Peterson, who Packer fans loathe because he's great. Same reason why Bear fans loathe Brett Favre and now Aaron Rodgers.

On this one, I don't see how it's even a debate. Peterson is a game changer and someone you gameplan to beat. Grant is good, but let's not combine the good and the great.

I used to hate Grant. I've pretty much done a complete 180. I just feel like we've needed a change of pace back from him for a while. A speedy, flashy guy. Grant gets the job done and goes for the dirty work yards. We need someone that can catch balls out of the backfield and make something out of it.

#7 overall in rushing TDs
#5 overall in first downs

Only one guy who made more first downs than him had a better first down %, and that was AP. Every single guy who had more first downs also had at least 30 more carries

Not sure what guy you were watching that didn't score TDs or get first downs.

I think really the only big negative is he didn't get a lot of big runs, but honestly, if you're not breaking lots of big gains and still manage to put up a 4.4 average, you're a very productive and consistent back.

Look at it this way:
AP
4.4 average
12 runs over 20
3 runs over 40

Grant
4.4 average
8 runs over 20
2 runs over 40

If you look at those stats, who would you guess is the guy running into his oline or getting stuffed at the line more often?

And even the "doesnt break many big ones" thing barely holds water.
Tied for #11 with 8 runs over 20, which is above-average at worst. 8 only looks bad if you're comparing him to Chris Johnson at 22, AP who was #2 on the list only had 12.

I think we have a habit as packer fans to unjustifiably over-analyze grant. I guess we feel he could have even better production... But its really hard to say Grant had anything but a top 10 season in 2009.

Edit: Just saw tezzy's post, my numbers are a little different but we agree on the point! from nfl.com's stats.

The fact Grant doesn't get lots of long break away runs like AP is a great thing... No, stop laughing, I am serious. AP gets lots of break away runs and averaged 4.4 per carry. Grant got few breakaway runs and also had a 4.4 average. That means Grant gets clock eating first down producing consistent yardage. AP may get a couple 20 yard runs and a 40 then the rest of it is a bunch of very short runs. Contributing to lots of 3 and outs.

The best example is the difference between Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smith. Barry could be held to no yards for a half and end the game with 120 yards. That mean lots of 3 and outs resulting in punts. Emmitt would wait for his line to get him 3 yards then fall down for 2 more. The result was consistent clock eating first down producing drives. Emmitt couldn't carry Barrys jock with 2 hand and a shoulder strap. Who got more rings?

The best thing 1250 yards per fumble compared to 200 yards per fumble.
Sure, Grant doesn't get break away runs and AP does, Grant gets consistent positive yards and at the end of the play, it's still our ball.
I want to go out like my Grandpa did. Peacefully in his sleep.
Not screaming in terror like his passengers.

That Smith/Sanders comparison is very good Dexter, i think that is something people overlook far too often, they just want a flashy guy and dont think about time of possession, ball control or sustaining drives.

"Greg C." wrote:

Most RB's get a lot of yards in "junk time" when the game is over. That's part of their job: killing the clock and putting teams away. We have an RB who can do this, and now it's being counted as a negative.

And God forbid if, as Packer Traxx speculates, Grant broke off a 20-yard run during the Arizona game that inflated his YPC. We wouldn't want THAT to happen now would we? One of the biggest (and most legitimate) criticisms of Grant is that he does not make enough long gains, but if he does get one some fans will use that against him by saying that it inflated his YPC.

Let's face it: Grant is a very good RB. Not a superstar, but easily good enough to be part of a championship offense.

"tromadz" wrote:

Sorry I want my running back to get yards when the game is close and we NEED them, not when the game is over(either blowing out opps or being blown out).

Who said I didn't want him to break off long runs? Nobody? Okay.

"Grant is a very good RB." - Agree to disagree on that one. Very good running backs don't get arm tackled every time. They don't run into their own linemen so much it becomes his 'thing.' A good RB can block. And I swear to christ if someone argues he's a good blocker I'm gonna lose it.

Agree to disagree. You know who is a better running back than Ryan Grant? Every other running back on our roster.

How many times in gameday chats does everybody predict a gain of 1 on 1st down runs? It almost always happens! But it's McCarthys\Olines\TTs\Bigfoot's fault.

He's not good. I hope he BECOMES good. I hope he has a pro bowl year and people come back to this thread and go "See, tromadz, ya dummy!!

I'm all for that. Won't happen though. Luckily we have a great passing attack and defense. Our running back is average at best though.

Okay, now go on about how I hope he averages 20 yards a game or something I didn't say.
