Just my two cents here. I'm not that familiar with your family situation and thus am not comfortable giving too much specific advice.

Think about your family first, you second. Anything else should just be an afterthought. Yes, how much money you make affects you and your family, but do not try to fool yourself into thinking that more money at the expense of time with family will EVER make you happy... at least for long.

How long before you need to make a decision? If you can wait it out for that year, try to find another job locally. If you find one, take the severance package. If you don't find one and don't have extreme confidence in your ability to find one quickly by that time's up, consider moving. If you need to make that decision now, that's a toughie.

think of yourself & keiana equally. this is an opportunity for you to expand your horizons & hers as well. i moved myself & boys 90 minutes from everything we'd ever known (big difference moving states away for you) but it was a leap of faith that i haven't regretted one minute. home is where you & keiana live - it's not an address. i'm so excited for you, kev. i think it's awesome that you have this opportunity!! it's a decision that alot of unemployed people wish they could make. best of luck with your choice.

4Pack beat me to it. Moving will force her to make new friends and also expand her horizons.

You're getting a raise.

That's two strong things in favor of moving.

CO is nice. Pack mentioned Pike's Peak (gorgeous). I could have sworn someone said that the schools there are good (and then they must have edited their post as I can't see who said it).

The fact that you have never lived outside of WI means that you need to move. 4Pack is right.

I've lived in the Springs. Very nice area. Best tap water I've ever tasted too. My neighbor across the street was our Olympic Weightlifting Coach.

CO will toughen up your lungs. It's no coincidence that our Olympic training is in Colorado.

At the absolute worst, you could both hate it and appreciate Wisconsin much better when you move back. Seattle made me appreciate California.

It may be sad but those statistics don't surprise me. I'm curious though, for a few of them, if there's more up-to-date statistics? 1978 is 32 years ago and can account for a whole generation.

EDIT: Sorry Kevin for completely ignoring your situation. The one thing that comes to mind for me is what it's like moving as a child. New school, new teachers, new friends--the only constant in this situation would be you. That's why I think it'd be important for you to discuss it with her for a while so that even in the event that you do relocate she doesn't feel like she was powerless. She's most likely going to focus on the negatives so it's up to you to make her notice and appreciate the positives.

However, I am no parent and am only drawing on my experience as a child.

I've grown up without a father. In some ways it's better, since you try and pick up the best attributes of many leading men in various situations rather than to just follow the guidance of your father. I don't miss the affection nor am I jealous of other people's father-son relationships.

I do plan to look after my children to the best of my ability, if and when I ever have any however.
