Excuse my ignorance but is it just the head ref looking at the difft angles and making the call? If you don't want full time refs, why not have a group of, say, 3 rules interpreters (i.e. lawyers, blah blah blah) whose job is to know the rule book better than the non-full time refs. During a questionable call, they assist the ref and tell him Rule 3.1.5c applies here. If there is a disagreement amongst the three, you would hope the majority would interpret correctly.

I'm still with Zero, too many stupid rules. Maybe after this, there will be a clarification of this rule (which is a clarification of a clarification already) and we will have the Greg Jennings rule. My proposal below:

Greg Jennings rule: when a player meets the following conditions:
1.)plays for the Packers
2.)clearly has 3 feet on the ground
3.)and then subsequently loses the ball out the back of the end zone but
4.) doesn't complain because he is more concerned about possible personal injury,
...that shall be ruled a touchdown.

It will fit in well with all the other ludicrous, extraneous, superfluous and any other -ous rules you can think of.

The issue with going to ground is if you catch it and you are being tackled as you catch it as was the case with that Oakland receiver.

I thought it could've been a horse-collar too. The reason that style of tackling is prohibited is because of the knee injuries that it causes, isn't that curious? Didn't Jennings hurt his knee on that play?

That's the difference between the Oakland game and this one, in the Oakland game that was definitely going to the ground whilst making the catch, here, we're arguing that Jennings had made his football move (2 steps running forward) before being taken down.

After watching the videpo, that was a touchdown, GJ caught the ball took 2 steps, the defender stripped the ball same time Greg took 3rd step, Greg doesn't start going down untill after the third step, so the control rule should not have been used in that situation.

To vague, the rule interpetations, but no-one is going to convince me that wasn't a TD.

Doesn't really matter, Packers won, tha't what counts......on to Pittsburgh.

it's a freakin touchdown - if you think it wasn't, you're wrong.

refs do NOT get it right 99% of the time - if they did i wouldn't be screaming at my tv about blown calls every week.

full time refs might be the answer but i don't think the league will ever do it.

I can see it how some think it is a TD and how some think it isn't. My beef is not as much with the referee's as it is with the rules and amount of them we have and the lack of a clear cut and dry set of rules. They took a tough man's game and put a sissy dress on it.

thanks for the video link; def looks like a touchdown. Jennings wasnt going down until after the 3rd step. IMO he has possession and takes 2 steps therefor = touchdown; sure he gets pulled down after the 2nd step.

IMO he wasnt catching a pass he had already caught it and was in the endzone with 2 feet planted = touchdown.

NFL spokesman: Jennings ruling was correct

According to a league spokesman, referee Mike Carey correctly applied Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3, Item 1 of the NFL Rule Book (page 51) correctly when it came to Greg Jennings' non-touchdown against the Chicago Bears:

"If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact with an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball after he touches the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete."

The timing of when contact was made by Bears CB Charles Tillman was the determining factor.

"The key is that the receiver was contacted by the defender before he got both feet down so he is therefore considered to be going to the ground and has to hold on to the ball throughout the whole process," the spokesman said.

Same rule Ironman was refering to earlier in this thread.
