There's a better chance of hell freezing over than us moving to a 3-4, IMO.

McCarthy and Thompson aren't quite on the hot seat, but they just came off a disappointing season and a switch to a 3-4 would require a massive overhaul on defense. That takes time, and I think McCarthy and Thompson both know they don't have enough time to completely rebuild the defense.

Plus, without a great NT the 3-4 can be terrible. Think of the Jets when they had DeWayne Robertson instead of Kris Jenkins.

A good NT is harder to find than a good QB, and with so many 3-4 teams nowadays I don't think changing to it makes sense like it used to.

I'm behind whoever we pick, but I think a switch to the 3-4 will end the McCarthy/Thompson era.

If we got Mike Nolan, I don't see Ray Lewis joining the Pack.

As soon as he got into Nolan's defense, his numbers were slashed.

I just hope we get Nolan...seems like a good fit to me and he has a lot of class.

There was possibly no other reason for that right?

Say, maybe, the D-Line of the Ravens was horrid, not being able to occupy enough blockers up front to leave the LBs open to make plays.

Nah, couldn't be. It must've all been Nolan's 3-4 scheme that was eerily similar to Marvin Lewis' 3-4 scheme before he left Baltimore. [/sarcasm]

And that's excactly the problem we will have with running a 3-4 atm if we won't get a dominant NT, I'm afraid.

Anyway, back to Nolan. He might run a 4-3 base for one year so we can get some players to adjust to the 3-4. The 3-4 looks great, but if you have a bad team, it seems to be worse than any 4-3 out there. If you have a good defense, it seems to be the best there is.

Maybe he'll mix it up a bit if he comes here, but I certainly hope we'll wok towards a 3-4, I just don't see us running a good one right now and I hope Nolan sees that if he comes here.

If we ran a 3-4, we should really look out for Terrell Suggs, Bart Scott and an NT. We would only use Hawk and Barnett from our current team as LBs. But the bad thing if we ran it is, does Aaron Kampman know how to play 3-4 DE or a rush OLB in 3-4?

Edit: Forgot to say, if anyone says getting both Scott and Suggs is absurd, I would point out that we have lots and lots of cap space.

I'm sure if Nolan gets his staff, this defense will be playing top of the line defense !!! Get it done packzz !!!

Really?

In 1998, Nolan was DC of the Redskins, who finished 24th in the league in total defense.

In 1999, Nolan was still DC of the Redskins, who finished 30th in the league in total defense.

In 2002, Nolan was the DC of the Ravens, who finished 22nd in the league in total defense.

Hardly top line defense. Don't assume that a big name hire automatically equals success, especially since Nolan failed in San Fran.

That said, I'm really excited by this move, IMO it's all but official. Nolan is a tremendous talent, one who should provide continuity for a few years. He'll be a pleasant change from Sanders.

I just hope Nolan is good enough to adjust his scheme to the talent he inherits, and more importantly he is a good enough teacher to have success with his scheme.

Hrmm... by being so selective you made me curious.

Scoring D ranks (10 years):

1995 (Giants): 16th
1996 (Giants): 10th
1997 (Redskins): 8th
1998 (Redskins): 28th
1999 (Redskins): 24th
2000 (Jets): 13th
2001 (Ravens): 4th
2002 (Ravens): 19th
2003 (Ravens): 6th
2004 (Ravens): 6th

Definitely a mixed bag. But he does have plenty of experience at DC.

It should be pointed out that Kampman already lost quite a bit of weight to become a lighter speed rusher for the Packers (a few years back). It might be easier for him to put more weight on than to keep trimming down.

In regards to the NT position, I wonder if we could get BJ Raji in NT shape in time, if we drafted him? He played between 320-330 this past year - lighter than Kris Jenkins, about the same size as Vince Wilfork.

can't count on a rookie. ever. i'm just going to throw my opinion out there: we will not switch to 3-4. If we do, then Kampman is out. so is Nick Barnett, so is Jolly, and Pickett, and Colin Cole, and a slew of less important role players. it won't happen.

I have a long record of hoping it doesn't happen. I was just anteing up since that's the game of this thread. Anyway, I guarantee you can't secure a veteran NT. A rookie would probably be the only way to go.
