JS Online has a good article looking at the 3-4, 4-3, the Packers fit, and the candidate coaches. Nolan's record as a DC in that article is pretty good (except for the Redskins years), over a number of years.

I'm sure if Nolan gets his staff, this defense will be playing top of the line defense !!! Get it done packzz !!!

Really?

In 1998, Nolan was DC of the Redskins, who finished 24th in the league in total defense.

In 1999, Nolan was still DC of the Redskins, who finished 30th in the league in total defense.

In 2002, Nolan was the DC of the Ravens, who finished 22nd in the league in total defense.

Hardly top line defense. Don't assume that a big name hire automatically equals success, especially since Nolan failed in San Fran.

That said, I'm really excited by this move, IMO it's all but official. Nolan is a tremendous talent, one who should provide continuity for a few years. He'll be a pleasant change from Sanders.

I just hope Nolan is good enough to adjust his scheme to the talent he inherits, and more importantly he is a good enough teacher to have success with his scheme.

What's more is that Nolan has ties to both Bill Parcells and Dan Reeves.

Perhaps Nolan is well versed in a 4-3, and prefers a hybrid system that he'll be implementing?

Nolan? Yes. Fine by me.
3-4? No, thank you.

We're not made for a 3-4. Jenkins would be OK at DE, but we'd be turning one of our best defenders (Kampmann) into a liability on the other end. None of our DTs are big enough to clog the middle alone, and our LBs aren't big enough to be outside pass rushers.

Not to mention that it would simply be too much change all at once. New staff, and a new scheme? And new players who can make it work? We weren't that bad...

I think it would be a good hire just so as long as he wears a suit :)

I think he'll run a hybrid 3-4/4-3 defense. I would be shocked if GB just runs a 3-4. They'll show a lot of different looks. I think that's a good thing and I think a change might not be a bad thing. Mike Nolan is a smart coach and a good football coach and if he and Mike McCarthy work well together that should make things even better.

Ted Thompson needs to attack free agency aggressive though. I would love to see the Packers go out and get Terrell Suggs and then draft Everett Brown or another 3-4 backer and all of a sudden you have two outside linebackers.

I'm still hesitant to believe the report though. If it is true then Mike McCarthy is a fast mover.

Oh and Aaron Rodgers meet Mike Nolan the guy that passed on you in the NFL Draft for Alex Smith.

That's interesting too.

Porky, I'll throw this out there.

NOTE: This is from Joe Arrigo at PC, so if you don't like him, this might not be for you. I don't want to turn this into a yes/no on Arrigo thread...

Joe commented about a week ago that he was hearing Sanders would be let go, and Nolan would be the front runner for the job.

Arrigo also said if Nolan got the job, he'd press Ted to go after Ray Lewis heavily. Seeing as Nolan and Lewis were both a part of the Ravens, Lewis should be familiar with Nolan's scheme, and can help facilitate the adjustment from a 4-3 to more of a 3-4 look.

I'm also going to say Lewis fits the bill of what Al and Charles said about needing more leadership on this team.

I say no to Joe, but I think it's obvious that Mike Nolan would push for Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, or Bart Scott. I think anyone running the 3-4 would, but honestly if Ray Lewis is allowed to test free agency, New England will probably swipe him up. They need more help at linebacker and Lewis is a good fit with Jerod Mayo and a healthy Adalius Thomas. It also gives him a shot at the ring. I'm a Packer fan, but New England is still set to be dangerous for years to come.

I hope we get him though.

I actually think inside backer might work with Nick Barnett and A.J. Hawk. Hawk was considered for a 3-4 MLB spot in the draft I recall by none other than Mike Nolan and the 49ers. I know the linked to a article written said he's a poor fit, but Hawk has the talent, intangibles and work ethic to play in any system in my opinion. He needs a good teacher though and it's still a risk. No doubt it would be a project.

I'd love to see it happen.

Adjusting to the 3-4 would take some time but we're in a position to do so. We can draft another defensive end or linebacker with our high pick (#9) in the draft.

I wouldn't mind seeing us draft Ray Maualuga the LB from USC, Aaron Curry the hybrid LB from Wake, to help vill the void.
