Janis is a lock because he's a great gunner, plays on 4 other ST groups, has WR potential, has played through his injuries with no perceived drop in performance, and he's cheap.

Being just a gunner will not get him a 2nd and 3rd contract, like Bush; he'll need to do more. How much more he does will determine if he gets a min. 2nd contract or a Bush deal [about 2x the min deal]. To get a min. 2nd contract, he will need to remain a top gunner, return kicks well, play well in his other 3 ST groups and probably only need to contribute in a handful of offensive packages [as opposed to being a full fledged WR on depth chart].

We also must consider maybe that he's not such great gunner. Janis' splash plays are outstanding; but the key to STs coverage is all 11 guys CONSISTENTLY keeping the timing on their lane assignments and CONSISTENTLY properly reacting when a lane is opened because the other team made an exceptional block. Does Janis knuckleheadedly blow assignments on STs like he does on offense? I don't know, but I'd be surprised if he didn't. There could be a play on where Janis is supposed to control his blocker and hold the edge, like an OLB in the run game; but instead he blows his assignment and attacks making a shoe string tackle on the punt returner. We, the fans, jump up and pump our fists and scream, "way to go Janis;" Zook chews him out on the sideline and grades this purported great play an "F."

We also dont know how good he is on those other ST groups. One way to tell if a guy is a fringe player on a ST group is when a guy previously inactive [like Goodson, Perillo or Crockett] gets a chance to play and they bump someone off a STs group. I never noticed Janis getting bumped, which indicates he's at least not a fringe player on those other ST groups.

You raise a good point, Barfarn. We all think JJ is the next Steve Tasker due to the flash plays, but he sure as hell made some flash plays in AZ yet remained in the doghouse all year due to his consistency.

Well....only time will tell who stays and who goes. Janis might not be the best mentally, but that doesn't mean he won't improve.
Only the coaches know who will be here when the regular season begins.
How healthy will Jordy be? Or Ty Montgomery?
Those 2 players health could be a huge factor at decision time.

You can thank me for reminding you that EVERY player drafted by The Packers isn't going to be a frickin' superstar when he walks on the field at Lambeau.

How long before some of you call Trevor Davis or one of the other late round draft picks a bust because he hasn't been able to get on the field due to better play from veterans?

I'm betting some of you won't give them till the end of the preseason.

Another year same old whining bullshit

I'm not sure what you mean by Janis not seeing the field due to better play from veterans. He couldn't get on the field last year even when the veterans were injured. Was he so bad that we had to keep trying to force Adams and Montgomery back. It took an almost complete wipe out of the receiving corps in the playoffs for him to even get a chance. As far as Trevor Davis goes I wouldn't be surprised if he has better receiving stats than Janis this year.

It is frustrating that Janis may not be all that bright in catching on with the playbook, but to me it is equally frustrating that Mike McCarthy seems not to adapt the offense at times to take advantage of the kid's obvious speed. Yeah I get it that it would become predictable to have the kid come in for a fly route every time he lines up with the offense, but is being predictable any worse than not getting open like our guys did last year? Hell having him run his ass off may have helped open the middle some more for Cobb or whoever they had playing slot.

If Jeff Janis is one of the top three special teams players on the roster, he will be retained because he has proven at receiver he can run in a straight line very fast and pluck the ball out of the air. He will not be a top four WR on the roster because others are superior route runners in comparison and when your offense is precision and timing based, that's more important than running fast in a straight line.

Was listening to Mike Clements on Bill Michaels last night and they were discussing Janis.

Clements described one of the tennis ball drills and how they needed to close their eyes right before they caught it. Clements watched as Adams and Cobb got the drill, Janis walks over to do it and needed the concept explained to him a couple of times. He used this as an example of how the light just isn't turning on in the attic.

The more I read about JJ, the more Forest Gump comes to mind.

I believe I understand how Wisconsin fans feel about athletes from within their region. Local sports radio and tv broadcasters promote them on their programs. Hell, here in Richmond,Va. , I hear about athletes from our mid-Atlantic region and how they are doing in their professional sports. None of this is unusual . My point is that , IMO, we must be able to detach from our emotions and critically evaluate a player/s real value . The Coaches have already forgotten that player X went to MaryJane State U. , they are looking for the absolute best 53 players to compete with against other professional teams that want to kick GB's ass this Fall.

If Jeff Janis does not make this year's roster then Boo Hoo Hoo . To me that just means that the coaches felt that another player was more valuable to the team. I trust the opinions of these carrier professionals more than I trust some reporter looking for a splashy story or someone armchair Quarter Backing following their hard day of delivering Bread .

I trust that the best 53 players will be chosen, if J.Janis is one of them , then he will have earned it .

[cheers]

Everyday of presesaon practice brings it's ups and downs for every player.

That's why i called the article a joke.

It will all work itself out the next 4 weeks.

I'm hoping they all show so well that Ted Thompson and staff is going to have the hardest decision to make in their tenor at Green Bay.

I'm going to sit back and enjoy watching all these young guys try to prove they belong in The NFL.
I was addicted to The Hokey Pokey, but I turned myself around!

dfosterf (2-Jan) : Hats off to the Beast
dfosterf (2-Jan) : I'm at 71.76% in pick 'em. 2nd place. Beast is at a flat 75% 9 games ahead. That 75% has got to be unprecedented this late in the season

Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : BTW, not serious.
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : You don't care about it either!!!!
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : NIL and Portal killed college, no one cares about it.
Mucky Tundra (2-Jan) : outside of Texas-Arizona St, it's been a snoozefest

Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : After the way they played for most of the game yesterday, I don't see how you can sit anyone for the whole game
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : I'd say play everyone. Going into playoffs at 7th seed on two game lose streak - yucky
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Do the Packers have any best players?
beast (30-Dec) : Play or Rest*
beast (30-Dec) : Should the Packers play or free their best players vs the Bears?
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Packers should be 3 - 2 in the Division. Bonkers being swept by both Lions and Vikings. yikes
go.pack.go. (30-Dec) : All crazy stuff…and good point beast
beast (30-Dec) : Packers should be 0-5 in the division, can't say I saw that coming, even 1-4
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Sam Darnold 35 TD's ... another one
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Baker Mayfield, 39 TD's ... can't say I saw that one
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : No matter who is playing as 7th, I think we want them to win. Get rid of 2nd seed haha
go.pack.go. (30-Dec) : That would be dhazer who was rooting for Minnesota
beast (30-Dec) : Well, Commanders are currently the 6th seed and Packers the 7th
beast (30-Dec) : Who was it in Chat, that wanted the Vikings to win (because Lions fans upset them) because Packers could not lose the 6th seed?
beast (30-Dec) : If Falcons win, Packers stay as the 6th seed and Falcons lead the NFCS, if they lose, Commanders 6th and Bucs take NFCS lead
beast (30-Dec) : Win or Loss, the NFCS is going down to week 18
Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : if the Falcons win, how does that affect the overall NFC playoff picture? Does it mean that the NFC South comes down to week 18?
