If GB thinks he's worth a big contract that's fine (they obviously know better than me) but my opinion is he doesn't really produce enough when he's not dropping balls to justify "starter money". Maybe they think they can fix him though so who knows.

I just don't happen to agree with the principle that he is devalued greatly because of his drop percentage.

Fair enough.. so can we go back and tag Jennings for his high drops in 09? Or do with hold with that only "one" big drop? Seems that you are being selective.. additionally don't forget year three is generally the "click" year for a reciever.

We can't expect continued improvement as he matures, being that he is only in his mid 20's?

More numbers from last season.. puts him ahead of some of the best in the game in Charles Johnson and Fitzgerald. Legit #1's... albeit quality of QB play should be counted in. Still better than Holmes and Edwards with the Jets for example.

Who gives a fuck if Jennings, Fitzgerald, or Megatron drop a couple passes look what they do when they aren't dropping them. You think Jones gets treated unfairly but he doesn't really. A player deserves more criticism for the same mistakes than someone who produces much better results than them.

I'd love to know how much Jones' values himself at. Driver last season made 6 million. Jennings made about 5.4 million. Jones around 1.3 million. (Source: here ) I'd have to think anything more than 5.4 that Jennings got is a no-no for Jones since he is a lesser caliber of player.

So the question becomes what is "fair value" for Jones based solely on what our receivers are getting paid (ignoring whatever the FA market may dictate). I was originally thinking 4 million, but looking at Driver and Jenning's figures, I'm now thinking that is overpaid. Around 3 million, maybe? Another thing to remember: Jordy will be a FA soon too....

Same thing, just another opinion on it.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/07/27/rodgers-james-jones-should-be-packers-top-priority/

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers knows what he wants his team to do now that the NFL is open for business: Re-sign free-agent wide receiver James Jones.

“James is extremely talented and he’s a guy that I think we have to bring back without a doubt,” Rodgers told ESPN Milwaukee. “He should be priority No. 1. And I mean that with all my heart. He really should be priority No. 1. We don’t win the Super Bowl without him. And we need him.”

Jones was third on the Packers in catches and second on the team in receiving yards during the regular season, and he added 11 catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns in the postseason. If he were to sign elsewhere as a free agent, he’d be a significant loss to the Packers as a team and to Rodgers personally. Peter King recently predicted in Sports Illustrated that Jones would sign with the Bears, something no Packers fan would want to see.

Rodgers also said he’s hoping the Packers can keep right tackle Mark Tauscher, who will probably have to take a pay cut if he’s going to stay in Green Bay.

“I’m hopeful that Mark will be back with us, but I realize it’s a business, and I think he does as well,” Rodgers said. “I’m really hoping that he’s still with us. I don’t know what I’d do without that big guy in the locker room. He makes me feel better about myself every day. He’s an overrated backgammon and cribbage player, but he’s a hell of a 🏈 player, too. I hope we bring him back.”

I won't exactly be sad if he's gone. But I suppose I could see letting him compete and seal his own destiny throughout preseason and the first quarter of the year.

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

You have your opinion, I am trying to respect your opinion while defending mine.. I hold mine that we have a player that has produced at a very high level for a #3 or #4 comparatively to the league, would probably produce more if targeted more based on comparative numbers in success rate to others, and is still a young receiver in terms of experience.

It isn't about "being treated unfairly" as it is allowing one somewhat misleading stat cloud the overall value of the player.

All in the context, of all receivers on the same team had similar drop percentage numbers last year. You point to a number of years of stats, but then don't want to acknowledge similar issues and development of other receivers in the same system.

Receivers targeted between 15 & 18% of the passes... Jones numbers are near the middle of the group. Supporting that he has produced, however shouldn't expect "starter money" but still holds value. Note many in that group are #2 receivers.

If the Packers don't resign Jones, Rodgers endorsement will do nothing but help Jones at the negotiating table elsewhere. A hidden bonus maybe.

I had mentioned James Jones fumble issues. I think Greg Jennings lost a fumble against the Falcons in the post season. I'm sure that doesn't count because the Packers won the game ...

I don't acnowledge similar issues with other players because I don't have information on the other players (catch rate % does not = drop rate).

I really don't think there is some conspiracy to hate on James Jones. He's a likeable guy and has made some big plays but criticism on him is justified.

wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?

beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
