Williams has on full season as a starter and one season with 13 games started and played in.

Williams is the only complete RB on their roster in my opinion. If they get rid of him it will be hard for the rest of the backs to fill the hole. Stewart is good but has availability issues. Goodson appears to be a good receiving threat but I'm not sure beyond that. We are all familiar with Sutton. His age doesn't matter to me. The fact that they have a rookie QB is all the more reason to keep him IMO as he needs all the help he can get. If Williams left, and Stewart were to miss a week, would Goodson or Sutton be their starter? That seems like a terrible idea to me.

I would take no less then a first for Williams, and if its a low 1st (as the Packers pick likely will be), perhaps a player as well. If no team bites then I keep him and resign him. Goodson and Sutton are role players at best IMO and the Panther's offense goes through Williams and Stewart, if it's going at all.

With this being said, I'd love to get him. I would be somewhat hesitant to give up a first, but if it was a second and a decent player I'd jump all over it. Great RB and a great attitude which is more than can be said of Marshawn Lynch. If it happened would we keep both Grant and Williams?? I'm not sure. Perhaps Grant would be worth it if he wasn't able to reach many of his incentives.

Either way, I don't see it happening as the Panther's are surely asking too much, and rightfully so.

Yep, I don't see it happening, but I could see how it would make sense for the Panthers. It all depends on what their aiming for. Obviously, they are aiming for a Super Bowl, but I would think they'd know that's extremely unlikely without having someone to throw the ball to other than Smith. If they had another receiver who could make a play opposite of him, it'd make their offense a lot better. Right now, ... (someone came to my desk and chatted me up and I forgot what I was saying. Lets just assume it was dumb and move on) ooh wait ... right now teams can lock down Smith and they don't have another threat at all on the other side. James Jones would be a threat and I think that's the only way he would be.

If I were the Panthers and James Jones was on the table, still, the lowest I would go would be a 2nd rounder, possibly even a late first. James Jones would help them for sure, but I think Williams is the much better all around player so he wouldn simply be a complement to the deal.

Perhaps the Panther's don't view Williams (or Jones for that matter) in the same light as I do. Jones is a solid player in my opinion but I'm not sold on him being anything more than that, and that's with a great QB throwing him the ball. Decrease the talent of the QB and Jones becomes even less appealing to me. I agree he would be a #2 in Carolina but I think that may be saying more about the receiving corps of the Panthers then the quality of James Jones.

Of course, all of this is being said with a bitter taste in my mouth from Monday's game, lol.

DeAngelo Williams

for

James Jones and a 3rd/4th/5th rounder.

Doesn't sound that stupid to me.

At BEST we could get 2-3 more good years out of Williams, vs. 7-8 out of Jones. Driver isn't getting any younger and Jones is the perfect possession/sterling sharpe-esque compliment to the speed of Jennings. Fumbles aside, Jones will be a great wr for this team for many years.

If the team can get Williams, just peachy, but rbs are cheap and relatively easy to find, it's just not worth the long-term loss of Jones.

I think the Williams thing may be at least half smokescreen.

I think the Packers would rather have Lynch (mostly because of age) and I know the Bills want to dump him before the trade deadline, so any talk of the Packers going after Williams is just more leverage on our side of the teeter-totter. I'm sure we'd love to have Williams (if it were to work out that way), but I also think that Ted Thompson is using the situation to drive down the asking price for Lynch.

And I'm definitely on the "keep James Jones" bandwagon - I think he's going to be very, very good.

That's so simple yet obvious, I can't believe I didn't think of that, good point since69.

Either way, I'm happy that Ted seems to be taking the RB situation seriously and looking to address that glaring weakness. The team can get by for the time being, but a 70 ypg rushing attack won't cut it all year long, esp. in the playoffs.

We won't make the playoffs unless something is done about it NOW. (in my opinion)
We saw what our running game did Monday.....NOTHING.
Had we been able to gain yards, that would have opened up the passing game alot more.

If Carolina is rebuilding they need bodies, that they can develop, like Ted Thompson did a couple of years ago. We don't need bodies, we need a cople of quality players. Why would they want multiple draft choices like, 2nd, 4th, 6th; even 2nd,3rd,4th etc. We get a quality player and keep our #1 hopefully for another quality player. They get 3 picks for 1 player for players they like that should be able to become starter quality or better. Unless of course they have no confidence in their drafting ability.

maybe I am in minority...I am ok with James going as we need Brad for depth

We need a RB NOW and can afford to let James go but not Brad

Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
