Patty from PC has said the Packers are in discussions with the Panthers regarding a RB.

I'm not saying it's going to happen, I don't think it will. However, it would make sense for the Panthers. I believe the GM has final say on who is traded, not the HC, but I'm not sure how they operate.

Remember, Williams is 27 years old and a franchise tag is going to pay him LOTS of money, at a position you have a more than capable stable of running backs and at that age seems awfully risky. Doesn't seem to make much sense to me. With that said, he only has one full starting season under his belt, so maybe the "30" year mark won't apply as hard for him as others.

We'll have to agree to disagree about it making sense for the Panthers; while having a rookie QB, I think there is too much pressure on the HC to not try and be competitive now - which they have a shot (long one, at that) with their two-headed monster at RB.

Still, no one has ever seen Ted at the helm of a team this close to Superbowl caliber. For all we know, like Ron Wolf, he knows the team is close and is willing to sacrifice a bit of the future to take a proper crack at winning it all this year. Ted did say in his interview before the season that he wanted to win multiple Superbowls, not just one.

I think it makes no sense from the Panthers' point of view to try and do this. From Ted's perspective, who knows. Like evad said, maybe Ted has emphasized the draft so much so that he could put himself, when the time came, in a position to make that big move and put his team over the top. In 08, I believe, he came so close to getting Tong Gonzalez from the Chiefs and I never would have thought he'd entertain the idea.

I just don't think he'll find a partner to tango with in the case of the Panthers. I'd love it if he did, because Williams would be a major upgrade over B-Jack.

Don't suppose he could return punts.

lol how does it not make sense? You even said yourself they are starting a ROOKIE QB! Stewart and Goodson are both young and very talented. It would make sense to give your ROOKIE QB a weapon at WR like James Jones to compliment Steve Smith in his aging years.

If he's trying to be competitive now, starting a rookie at QB isn't exactly the right path to be taking. At least, not one that's named Jimmy Clausen.

But hey, maybe it's better to have three good RB's and not trade the one nearing 30 who's in the final year of his contract instead of trading him for a WR to help your young rookie QB.

I don't see any pressure on John Fox. He knows he's as good as gone and the Panthers know it too. He's just keeping the seat warm for Bill Cowher IMO.

Here's what Patty said about it.

I have been hearing that the Green Bay Packers are indeed exploring a trade for a RB but it is not with the Buffalo Bills.
Posted 16 September 2010 - 02:00 PM

There was talk, if my sources are indeed correct, with Buffalo about Marhawn Lynch but it happened back in late August before the cutdown to 53 playrs. Nothing since. According to the word I received Buffalo asked for the moon back then, so why would they listen to the Packers now with the perception of need on the part of Green Bay?

For the record the RB being scouted by Green Bay is a good special teams returner and a top receiver out of the backfield. No team is going to listen to trade offers for their #2 RB ! You just do not do something like that unless you have a sensation rookie that has made huge strides and you want to move him into the #2 role.

Contrary to opinion by some on this board Pat Lee CB does have interest from a few teams.

I doubt Green Bay will trade Donald Lee TE because of the veteran factor used as the reason why they cut Havner and kept Lee

Darryn Colledge would represent a significant loss for Green Bay. Despite the "hate" from most on this board Darryn is still quite good. Durable and plays hard, sometimes tries to do too much but overall he is better than mediocre. I hardly believe Ted Thompson would trade a player of his caliber for a player like Marshawn Lynch

I do not think we see A J Hawk going anywhere. I think Ted Thompson would love to keep A J this year and if they cannot work out a restructured contract allow him to walk. The comp pick would most likely net the Packers a 4th round compensation pick which I hear is about all anyone would give Green Bay for A J Hawk.

I think that's accurate. And I think the GM should bench the rookie QB and let him ride the pine for the season and let him learn the right way.

With Williams in a contract season, Fox in his last year, Clausen at QB, and a shaky start, Carolina may make a move. Bringing back Williams beyond this year would require dumping an untold sum of money into one position, since Stewart -- a first round draft pick -- also has a pretty sizable contract.

If you are Carolina you'll want to get something out of likely losing Williams. As AADP points out, that "something" might just be Williams' final year ... in a Panthers jersey. I totally agree that they have little outside of their talented RB core and Steve Smith. A few years ago they were competitive because of the run game and defense. Their defense doesn't seem to be at the same level, and -- I never thought I'd say this -- the quarterback play has declined with the loss of Jake Delhomme.

I'll remain skeptical on this one, but hey, it gives us something other than penalties to talk about.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

I was actually talking to my friend about getting Williams right after Grant got hurt. I have always loved Dwill. I always thought he could put up some crazy numbers if he didn't have to share carries. Shit he just had a 1515 yards and 18 tds with only 273 carries a couple seasons ago. He is 27 years old so that is something to think about. But zero pointed out hes only had one full season and he hasn't taken much abuse yet.

I hate rumors. They get your hopes up, usually for nothing.
I'd LOVE to see Williams here, but i think it's all B.S.
I hope i'm wrong.

Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move

Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
Zero2Cool (10-Apr) : Guessing they probably knew. Did he have cast or something on?
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : Did they know that at the time or was that something the realized afterwards?
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Van Ness played most of season with broken thumb
wpr (9-Apr) : yay
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Mark Murphy says Steelers likely to protect Packers game. Meaning, no Ireland
Zero2Cool (8-Apr) : Struggling to figure out what text editor options are needed and which are 'nice to have'
Mucky Tundra (8-Apr) : *CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP*
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : WR who said he'd break Xavier Worthy 40 time...and ran slower than you
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Who?
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Texas’ WR Isaiah Bond is scheduled to visit the Bills, Browns, Chiefs, Falcons, Packers and Titans starting next week.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Spotting ball isn't changing, only measuring distance is, Which wasn't the issue.
