it would have also put the ball on the 1 yd line with an untimed down for PI.

No, it would have resulted in an incompletion. Reaching into the wide receiver's "basket" is not pass interference; witness what happened to Driver earlier on the game on a perfectly thrown pass. Lifting the receiver's leg or pushing him out of bounds assumes he's caught the ball. Once he has the ball in his hands, you can do whatever it takes (within reason) to prevent the completion.

You mean the PI that they got away with. That should have been called, but Oh well. It would only have stopped a punt.

There are places in every coverage if given the chance, the O will win, they have the cards. Which is why, going soft should never be considered. Can't even come up and lay out a WR without a penalty and fine so mine as well go after the QB.

Bell was in the best spot to protect him. He had the sideline which meant he only had to protect one side, not both. Great catch, and having both toes down before the catch would have made pushing him out quite hard. best bet is what he tried
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Anytime the offense racks up 36 points, and loses. I have a hard time saying it was not the defenses fault we lost.

"wpr" wrote:

Agreed. Plenty of blame all around.

No. It's on the D.

The O got us 36 points. That = success. 36 points is more than the New Orleans Saints, the best O in the NFL, averages.

Allowing 37 points to a team that can only score 7 against the Cleveland Browns the week before is an epic fail.

Back to the original post - why were we only rushing 3 people with Al Harris out? We were giving Ben 5+ seconds the whole drive. Of course he was going to find an open receiver. ANY good QB would have.

Back off topic for a moment,
The whole team was to blame.
Offense dropped passes. (22 incomplete passes) Horrid rushing game.
ST well there was none. Missed field goal. Punting 34.4 net avg.
defense well we know about the last drive and the 500 yards passing given up. There were 7 penalties on the Packers (O & D) and 3 of them on that last drive.
They lost the time of possession for the game 24.38 to 35.22
The team wins because of turnovers. They count on it and they got none.

WPR - The simple facts are the O scored 36 points. That's a lot of points. We should always win when the O scores 36 points. This should be automatic.

This goes to show that our D is not an elite D. This is what I was saying when people were posting we had the #1 D. That's in yards. Yards mean nothing. Points are what counts.

Now turnovers, I agree with you. Turnovers are drive killers. Our D failed to get one. Had we gotten just won, we wouldn't have allowed 37 points.

I agree that 36 points should be enough to win any game. Neverthe less the whole team was culpable. All though I can see that some would place the greatest blame on the defense.
A little extra from any of the units would have gotten the win.

On a play like that he should have defended with his other hand, and used the inside hand to push the reciever out of bounds, that is taught in high school.

"Porforis" wrote:

How often do you see a QB throw a ball half that fast (or accurate) in High School, and how often do you see a CB that's been riding the bench all year do so successfully?

And I'm telling you that nobody but Woodson or Collins has a better chance of successfully defending that play without a flag. Bush would have gotten lost, Tramon would have drew a flag, and I don't know about Bigby. I'm sorry, but I can't fault the guy for being brought off the bench and doing a better job that Bush would have done. I put a crapton more blame on lack of pressure and the playcall.

"Porforis" wrote:

Porforis - I agree. I put more blame on rushing only 3 pass rushers the whole drive. That was stupid.

Look, what do you expect from this Bell guy? How far is he down the depth chart? I haven't even heard of him.

OK. I left to actually look up who he is and guess what? He's undrafted and only recently joined our team. Do you really expect this guy to learn our D overnight? Really?

Dom Capers - rush 4 people if 3 aren't getting the job done. That's twice now. Happened against the Vikings. Happened against the Steelers. Do NOT let it happen in the Playoffs.

we have a 4 page thread devoted to a ~7 sec. coverage by one guy. He had a split second to react to the throw, and if you watch the replay, he covered wallace really well (for a recently added cb as others have mentioned).

All this talk about lifting his legs, pushing him out, etc. are so easy to critique in hindsight. BR had a tiny window out of bounds to throw into due to tight coverage from Bell. He thread the needle, props to B.R. and wallace for making the play on an otherwise well defended play by bell.
