THE DEFENSE DID NOT COST US THIS GAME.
This game was lost in the first half by the offense. Largely by Rodgers.

I think it's more than a little uncalled for to call evad04 a troll. He may have a sharp temper at times, and I may disagree with him at times, but I can't deny he's one of the more rational, intelligent, dedicated members of this forum. He puts a lot of thought into his posts.

I've been rather dismayed by the proliferation of personal attacks we've seen on this forum the past few days. I have no problem with vehement disagreement, but that's no grounds for character assassination. None of us wants to censor content or stifle discussion, but if we can't keep it cordial, we're going to have to put our foot down and start locking a lot of threads.

He's acting like we all want Mike McCarthy fired tomorrow.

I was called the same things when I wanted Ahmad Carroll released. "He doesn't get penalized as much as you think! Support the players!"

Same story with Bob Sanders. "You are not a D coordinator. Bob Sanders knows more about defense than you ever will!"

Funny thing is, after Carroll was released, the same people saying it would be stupid to cut him were praising the move afterward. Same thing with Sanders. If it was such a bad move to fire him, why didn't anyone criticize MM for doing just that?

Derrick Frost:

What does MM do? He cuts Frost mid season. No one objects. Sigh.

I have a feeling when MM is fired at the end of the year, the same people that are calling me a fair weather fan will be saying, "good, now we can get a real coach in here."

Hilarious.

You quoted me and I didn't see the distinction of saying others. I seen 'zero' in there on two posts in which I was quoted.

I am saying if Mike McCarthy doesn't get this team back on track, he needs his position evaluated at the end of the year. I even said, not right now, firing him now is not the right thing.

I'm not saying CAN THE SEASON SCREW IT! I think we still have a chance, but the coach needs to coach better or for two years in a row we're going to see the same problems again. That's one issue I have with him. Another is the OL scheme. I've harped on this for a long time. When we lost Jeff Jagsawhatever, I feel we should have ditched the ZBS too. We don't have anyone who's an expert teaching the scheme. Hell, Campen didn't even play in the scheme he's trying to teach.

I specifically remember giving Evad +1s on more than one occasion. He's a damn good poster and I'm glad to have him on this board.

This loss has made a lot of us lose our tempers. Let's try to keep things in perspective. On the other side of the internet is another living, breathing human being. Let's not forget that.

The tough defense was still a let down in a number of situations, though. They deserve a portion of the blame. Offense, defense, and special teams all left something to be desired. But it's also important to take into account that there times when the Vikings just played well. Their defensive front four has two players that are arguably the best at their position (Jared Allen as a 4-3 pass rusher is arguably the best in the business as is Kevin Williams as a 3-technique 4-3 DT, with Fat Pat Williams to boot). This isn't excusing poor play by the Packers -- it's just a friendly reminder that it wasn't the Chiefs that gave our offense problems in the first half.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

Cool article by Bowen on the defense speaking out to the press. Dunno if it's been posted elsewhere.

I don't know about the team, but Mike McCarthy's losing me.

1) We're too one-dimensional on offense. We don't need to be a run-first team, but we need enough of a running game to slow down the other team's pass rush. MM only makes a token attempt at running the ball, in my opinion. Running the ball 10-15 times a game while throwing it 35-40 times isn't enough to keep the opposing team's defense honest.

2) He seems lost on the sideline, and doesn't seem to be completely in control of the team. The Johnny Jolly penalty was an example. As I'm watching the game and Jolly goes over and sits on the bench at the end of the series, I was wondering where the coach was. Nobody was chewing him out...er, providing feedback that the penalty was not acceptable.

MM was asked after the game why he didn't bench Jolly, etc. He said that he hadn't seen the play, and that to bench Jolly would have hurt the team. (http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20091103/PKR07/91103194/1954/pkr03?GID=xko+gO70sY/REDoNDN/5PkKYwX7PpQRld2wptXXfg4Y%3D)

To me both of those responses were lame. He may not have seen the play, but he had to have seen the officials flags. He had to hear the officials call that a personal foul was called after the play was over. He had to realize that his defense was staying on the field after stopping the Vikes on 3rd down. He had to realize the Vikes ended up scoring a touchdown instead of kicking a field goal. He has guys up in the booth that could certainly tell him what happened on the play if he had any questions.

I couldn't help contrast his indifference with Mike Holmgren. If something like that had happened on one of Holmgren's teams he would have provided immediate feedback to that player before he had even reached the sideline. In my opinion, either MM isn't interested enough in providing immediate correction when a problem occurs or he's getting overwhelmed during the game and not in control enough on the sideline.

3) Inability to solve mental-error recurring problems (avoidable penalties, pass blocking breakdowns leading to unabated shots on the quarterback, etc.). This has been a problem for the last four years. I don't know whether it's the coaches, the players, or a combination of both, but the coaches seem to be unable to get through to the players enough to change the on-field performance to eliminate the problems. In my opinion, it's primarily on the coaches, and their responsibility to adjust their coaching to get through to the players. I'm tired of hearing "we've got to get that fixed."

4) Zone blocking system. I detested it when we played the Broncos and I was appalled when we adopted it. Our running game has deteriorated badly from the power running game we had under Mike Sherman.

I can't shake the feeling that MM is sliding more toward Ray Rhodes than Mike Holmgren, which is making me start to wistfully look at some of the other coaches out there and speculate if maybe we could do better.

I remember Holmgren grabbing Bill Schroeder by the facemask that time. LOL. MM is much more of a "players coach." I think he is closer to Ray Rhodes in that regard.
But I still don't think what Jolly did was that bad. I think he was just getting in the dude's face. Their helmets bumped. He wasn't looking to head butt the dude, imo.
Another "reputation" penalty.
