After 6 games this season I think it's safe to say the rebuilding of the safety position is trending in the right direction.

First off Xavier McKinney has been worth every penny since Gute backed up the dump truck full of money to his front door this offseason.
image.png You have insufficient rights to see the content.

The guy is taking away huge sections of the field on passing downs and when challenged has come up with 5 INTs. This by itself would be pretty good.

Also, cool aesthetics

However, Gute wasn't done with signing McKinney. I remember in the runup to the draft reading that this years safety talent was shallow and being a bit bummed. I knew we needed bodies there and was wondering if the team just had the misfortune of needing a guy there in a year where there might not be one. Enter Javon Bullard and Evan Williams.

There are more plays from earlier this season but you get the idea. On top of Bullard showing athletic flashes since the start of the season, there's been Evan Williams the past two weeks.

Bullard and Williams are still rookies so there will be some lumps of coal but it's clear that defense functions better with them on the field than off (as well as Cooper, but that's another story). The kicker in all this is that we still don't know what we have in the third safety the team drafted Kitan Oladapo.

It has been such a long time since we had a complete herd of quality safeties. It's so exciting. Just wait until Oladapo starts getting playing time.

Everyone seemed to think the Giants were going to Franchise Tag S McKinney, but then they suddenly decided against it for some strange reason, which I can only assume they'll regret.

I'm assuming it had to do with Franchise Tagging RB Saquon Barkley and how that did not end well for them.

Gute has started a trend, of talking to the media a bit around the time of scouting combine, and makes a bold statement that the media eats up.

When I go to evaluate his statement, I usually end up saying BS to it... as it goes the opposite of what he's been doing.

But he's kept to his word almost every time going forward, even if that wasn't true in the past. Such as wanting to get more involved in power gap running, despite having a zone run scheme. Or wanting to get more involved in developing QBs, in which they have brought in more QB coaches and more QB prospects.

The reason it's relevant to this thread, is that Gute said he wanted the nickel and two Safety positions to all be interchangeable with each other.

While I'm not sure Nixon can play S or if McKinney can play nickel, clearly Bullard and Williams can and have played both deep Safety roles and slot CB roles and done it well.

I just wish the Packers were better at selecting linemen .. but the Packers have hired former OL coach James Campen to help scout and I'm hoping that helps the OL selections and scouting.

Gutekunst doesn't seem to mislead. Before 2020 NFL draft he said if there's a QB they want in round one they'd take him. And he did. That was with Aaron Rodgers still on the team.

And quality here is a relative term since the bar to be cleared was being better than guys like Peprah and McMillian. Haha wasn't living up to his 1st round pedigree but hadn't gone full "business decision" mode like he would in 2017+2018 thanks to the concussion he suffered in 2016. Richardson was intriguing but an injury cut his career short in 2015 (much to Zeros dismay).

Going back further is Butler, Robinson and Prior for two seasons in 1996+1997.

In between 1996 and now it's been a lot of one good guy (Sharper, Collins, Amos), one inconsistent guy (Bigby, Roman, Savage) with liabilities behind them (Jue, Redmond).

A lot of Packers writers were incredulous at the idea. How in the world would Gute need to make that many picks? How many could possibly make the roster? While Gute traded some away to trade up, he got some picks back and stuck to his word by making 11 selections (and all but the 7th rounders made the roster with King currently on the PS).

dfosterf (18-Aug) : We do have good depth at running back imo. Still so frustrating. Bitching about it is a futile excercise, which I plan to do anyway.

beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
