Forget NEEDS. Ted Thompson is NOT going to draft based on that.
Ted Thompson is going to draft based on which guys show the most potential to be good or even great players in future years. When you start drafting guys to fill holes you have immediately your asking for trouble.

I'm not saying a rookie cannot start or won't be valuable in their rookie year because some are but what that really says is how much more you can expect to get out of them in the future.

I will use Mario Williams as an example. He did start his rookie year but the truth is he wasn't very good. THIS year now they talk about him as a possible candidate for DPY. Now that's getting something out of a #1 pick. He did not, however, earn his keep that first year and if Houston NEEDED quality play from that DE spot that year they didn't get it anyway.

Where the big difference is in draft philosophies in NEED vs. BPA is the NEED picks NEED to be good enough to contribute right off the bat and BPA is all about YOU NEVER HAVE ENOUGH GOOD PLAYERS.

NEED is RISKY gentlemen. IF you NEED a OT and feel it is such a huge need it should be done with your 1st round pick how many players are you looking at? Three or four maybe? How many players are left on the board? HUNDREDS! You have just lowered your odds substantially by narrowing the field.

A team is ONE INJURY away from needing a quality player to step up and with the roll over in the NFL today with personnel your about a year or two away from having a completely different agenda on what you need.

Pick the best player you see out there. Good players always find a way to get on the field. I don't care how solid a team is at a certain position if a young guy comes in and performs at a higher level at a position already perceived as "solid" how can that hurt your football team when all that does is make them better?

Getting Crabtree would be a nice addition, but WR isn't what they need, plus one of the current WR's would have to be gone from what is already one of the top 5 receiving groups in the league. It would only help things to have him on the field, but the team would be smarter to address the defensive needs first. A talented receiver can be found later (Donald Driver) although I know any talented player can be drafted later. I guess what I'm saying is that it would be a more wise decision to address the defensive needs first.

Cuz, your point would be valid, except for the fact that Jones and Martin combined contributed barely 400 yards last season. Had we lost one more WR, even for a few weeks, the results could have been disastrous. We could draft Crabtree, cut both Jones and Martin, and still probably come out ahead (in terms of yardage and TD receptions). If it came down to that, I'd go for Crabtree, cut or trade Martin, keep Jones, and draft a prospect WR somewhere in the 6th or 7th (or possibly pick up an UDFA). For that matter, I'd be tempted to trade Jones, too, if we got good value in return.

This is a good story on Crabtree as a prospect:

LINK

That Crabtree hasn't slipped on most draft boards is a testament both to the nature of his injury and to his complete dominance in college. No other receiver shed as many double-teams and caught the ball as cleanly (231 receptions in two years). No other top pass-catching prospect is as bigGMs describe Crabtree as "thick"and no other is as good at using his body to shield cornerbacks. Says his ex-coach, Mike Leach: "The way he can turn and put his ass on a defender really is remarkable."

As is the way he seems to have won over some NFL brass. At the combine, 16 clubs asked Crabtree about everything from dissecting defenses ("Easy," he says) to how many times a week he hits the clubs ("Maybe once"). "He's a good kid," says an NFC GM. "You can tell because his teammates loved him." And Crabtree loved them. Not because they nicknamed him Supa, but because they gave him a hard time for how he mumbled, chewed on Gatorade caps and draped himself over their shoulders like an overcoat when they shared a laugh.

But neither conversations nor tests could reveal Crabtree's most innate plus, his balance. Scouts don't measure it. They don't stand prospects on a Wii Fit and calculate which leg is dominant. But it's the most underrated aspect of a receiver's game, the reason why some break tackles and tiptoe the sideline while others don't. Crabtree learned how to keep his feet as a 4-year-old in Dallas, when he and his older brother, Keiron Stevenson, backflipped off cars, over bikes and up and down the street. "My choice was to land on my feet or on my head," he says.

To truly appreciate Crabtree's balance, scouts need only ask themselves questions and watch his film for answers. How do his shoulders look when he runs? One GM says they're always over his feet, never bobbing up and down. How does he handle contact? Very well: He broke 298 tackles last year on 97 catches. Does he stumble out of breaks? No. That's a skill honed by Leach, who would soak the practice field in Lubbock and make Crabtree cut on it. Can he adjust as he's running? Yes. One of Texas Tech's bread-and-butter plays was the tunnel screen, in which Crabtree caught a quick pass and ran along the line of scrimmage, waiting for an opening. "He's so fluid as he searches for a crease," says one AFC personnel director. "He's like a point guard." That's no coincidence. Crabtree played point so well at Carter High that Bob Knight offered him a scholarship. "He's the best receiver," says another NFC GM, "if not the best athlete."

So since in your estimation, we have no good players on this team, what will be the explanation if they win 10 or 11 games this year? Fluke? /quote]

Ummm? Are you talking to me?

I, and DH, I assume, feel like this team is headed in the wrong direction, as the record indicated by the way.

You feel differently, thus you have more positives to say. It doesn't UPSET me you feel like you do. I disagree with your assessment of Jordy and Jones, as would ALOT of people outside of GB. I see alot of posters on here that are enamored with any marginal player GB fields. I know homerism plays a big part of it but I'm just stating my IMO, Objective view of them.

The question was "what will be the explanation if they win 10 or 11 games this year?"

I find that funny because what was the explanation when they lost 10 games last year?

Was it, "I was wrong, maybe we aren't that good"

or

"Maybe DH and Donald Driver have a point"

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

It was

"We are better than we played" and "we were not a 6-10 team" and "We didn't get the breaks"

You put out the reasons that people feel the team went 6-10 last year..So whats yours for a 10 win seaosn? Over achieving? Lucky breaks? That is what nonstop was trying to find out

As far as the #2...I think after one season no one can say he is or isnt a #2..Look at Brett after his 1st season..I bet only a very select few thought he could be something different..Hell even the coaches wanted to bench him..

Ask this, does Jordy have the talent to be a #2..I think it is there, but question is can he use it to his advantage? You dont think he can, where as I think he can

I don't think they suck but I do feel they are average. Nothing I'm to excited about. Does this make me less of a fan?

Regarding the 10 win season I do feel like they over-achieved to a point. I also believe there were a few players from this team that are not here anymore that contributed to that success. Brett Favre, Corey Williams, etc.

I'm not pinning the 6-10 on A-Rod, so don't go all ballistic. I do feel Brett made things happen more than A-Rod did and I think people are ignoring that "It" factor and have just become stat junkies. Brett made things happen both good and bad. A-Rod just tried to make sure bad things didn't.

Corey was a valuable piece to the puzzle. Not worth but Cleveland gave him but it may of been worth it for GB to pay him if Harrell can't shake the Injury bug.

As far as the number #2 wr thing, you admit right now Jordy isn't a #2 which is what I said, and consequently what you took exception to. My point is Crabtree could come in and be easily a #2 IMO. He just has more physical ability than Jordy and Jones.

you cant say he is a lock to be a #2...

Lot of people claimed that a few years a go a certain wr coming out of college was a "lock"...

In fact some of those same people thought that the Pack should have done something to take him..But New England got him..

He was suppose to be the most gifted Wr in the draft, was going to light it up..

Where is he now?

Not sure but it was Chad Jackson

Crabs might have all the tools, but lets wait till we see how he performs in the real game..

See for me I can not say a certain players is a "lock" to be anything before he is even drafted..Got to see how he does in the real world of training camp and pre season

Chad Jackson wasn't a first round pick? He went I believe 4th in the second round. Bad comparison.

Crabtree is pretty special IMO. All draft picks have risk. I think he has much more upside than Jordy and Jones, that's all I'm saying.

Chad Jackson was a second round pick. And the only reason he caused so much noise was because of his 40 time.

I'll agree that was a terrible comparison.

beast (4h) : Sounds like no serious injuries from the Saints game and Jacobs and Watson should play in the Vikings game
packerfanoutwest (9h) : both games Watson missed, Packers won
Martha Careful (10h) : I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas!
Mucky Tundra (20h) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (20h) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (20h) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
Zero2Cool (21h) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (23-Dec) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (23-Dec) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (23-Dec) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I see what you did there Mucky
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : dammit. 3:25pm
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : Upon receiving the news about Luke Musgrave, I immediately fell to the ground
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : Yeah baby!
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : LUKE MUSGRAVE PLAYING TONIGHT~!~~~~WOWHOAAOHAOAA yah
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (23-Dec) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (23-Dec) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (23-Dec) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (23-Dec) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (23-Dec) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (23-Dec) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I literally just said it.
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : show us a scenario where Pack don't get in? bet you can't
