Here is yet another idea regarding Kickoffs.

1] Keep Kickoffs the same as now, but only for the game opener and to start the second Half.

2] Eliminate Kickoffs on all scoring plays and replace it with the following:
a) The team that is scored upon with a FG would get the football on the 20 yd line following the successful FG.
b) The team that is scored upon with a TD would get the football on the 10 yd line following the successful TD.

3] During the final 2 minutes of a game, the Kickoff would be in effect following any scoring play. It would also apply to overtime play as well.

This plan would keep the traditional Kickoff, but greatly lower the amount of them. In addition, helmet safety professionals will continue to try to create a !00% safe helmet and not just for football either. [smile]

I like the idea of to start each half. Then again after any score in the last 5 minutes.

I guess I am ready to put the ball at the 20 or 25 instead of having a kickoff return.

I think the defensive safety scoring team should get 10 points (or 7 at minimum), then the offensive that gave up the defensive safety should get the ball back at the 40 or 50... (heck if it's 10 points then maybe even at the other team's 40, to give them a shot at getting some of those points back). This would be SO much better than 2 points and a stupid kickoff punt.

It would be interesting to see the numbers on what the injuries are and what the rate of them is for Kick-offs. what about punts? If they take away kick offs, you are going to have an extra probably 10-12 regular plays, so there will be an increase of those injuries. And an increase pounding between Oline and Dline which is probably the place where the most look at brain injury needs to take place.

If kickoffs go through the endzone for a touch back... then does the clock even start?
If no, then there wouldn't be that many more plays per game, because they weren't taking time off the clock anyways.

As far as fans not noticing the concussions, when it happens to the kickoff and ko return teams it doesn't get mentioned by the announcers very often unless it's an ESPN highlight type of play. No one might even notice until he is back on the sidelines and see his eyes spinning around. His unit might not even get back onto the field. If they do there is never an announcement that one special teams player is filling in for another one.

The only real negative to getting rid of kickoffs is the onside kick conundrum, solve that and you can get rid of the play for all i care. For a long time they'd do the double commercial break around the kickoff which pissed me off, 8 minutes of commercials surrounding a 20 second play.

Saints were really helped winning their Super Bowl with that onsides kick. I believe its how they took the lead for the first time.

Hell, just turn the NFL into flag football NOW and save the cute little adjustments and gnashing of teeth.
Football as we have known it will be dead in another decade anyway.

Martha Careful (10h) : watching the Vikings and Lions it's understandable why they swept the Packers. So much better product

dfosterf (2-Jan) : Hats off to the Beast
dfosterf (2-Jan) : I'm at 71.76% in pick 'em. 2nd place. Beast is at a flat 75% 9 games ahead. That 75% has got to be unprecedented this late in the season
