Ted did fail in 07

Does anyone have figures on Ted Thompson's performance after 4 years with a team, compared to other, current GMs?

dd80 mentioned that Ted has 0 champsionships. I also wonder how many GMs have championships in their first 4 years with a team. I suspect that it's not many.

You know what...let's compare him to Ron Wolf during his first four years with the Packers:

Ron Wolf: 31-33, 0 championships
Ted Thompson: 31-33, 0 championships

I hate to look at it simply like this, but I'm using dd80 logic.

I also never said "Ted was right in '08". I blame him for:

1) The lack of depth on the d-line.
2) Letting Mike McCarthy keep the same defensive staff (I never liked Bob Sanders and his simple scheme - any good offense knew pretty well how to get around it).
3) His part of the Favre debacle. Way too much of a distraction.
4) Letting Mike McCarthy shuffle around the o-line instead of anchoring the five and going with it.
5) Extending Ryan Grant creating a domino effect this year with Tramon Williams (should have let Brandon Jackson play and Grant sit out - I think he is just as talented)

There you go.

2) How quickly we turn on people. First of all the move to keep Sanders when McCarthy was hired was the right move. How many years in a row do you hire a new DC? Especially when you have a new HC who is going to install his own offense. So you fire a guy after going 13-3? No. The fire came when it should have come.

3) NOBODY gets out of the Favre debacle alive. Brett made sure of it.

4) McCarthy has only said a million times how critical it is to solidify the "0" line. Those moves came out of necessity. Besides, when does the GM step in and tell the coach how to coach and who to play? Your blaming him for something he should never do.

5) Your way out ahead of yourself first of all. Tramon is not even a problem yet. You cannot tell me this agent is going to Ted Thompson and saying "you did it for Grant." As it is the kid is like the lowest paid player on the team and the agent, from what I have read, has only asked that they realize he's earned more than that. If you want to use Grant than you have to look on the other side of the coin. Ask Javon Walker.

1) Of course it is. We should have quality backups that can come in a do a respectable job. They obviously didn't. Ted Thompson should have seen the writing on the wall with KGB and should not have relied on Harrell coming back healthy and effective. Those two hurt us in terms of pass rush and DT rotation.

2) Sanders should not have been hired in the first place. That has always been my opinion. He is not a competent defensive coordinator.

3) Cmon, don't you think Ted Thompson could have acted quickly instead of just acting like he would stay retired? It just seemed to slow of process and more painful.

4) What are you talking about? Of course Mike McCarthy always said this...the fact is though he never acted on it! He shuffled our young offensive linemen all over the place, so they really never got comfortable at one position. Daryn Colledge got moved into 3 different positions and still played decent. He performed well despite MM's shuffling.

Haven't you heard what Mike McCarthy talked about this offseason? McCarthy's quote:

I'll say this, and it's something we've talked about internally that we need to try to migrate away from, and that's the musical chairs that we've had with our offensive line. I know injuries have played part of that and you can't avoid that, but we've had a number of, particularly our younger players, that are moving around and playing different positions, and the continuity that you do establish by setting a five or creating more competition at specific positions is something that we're definitely looking at.

He stated that he is going to keep more of the players at their respective positions and have them practice specific positions instead of shuffling them around. Also, don't tell me the GM has no say in what he does. He's his boss and Ted Thompson can add his input.

Good article about the shuffling of the o-line:
http://www.packerupdate.com/pu/2009/02/j.html

5) I think a lot of us are divided on how we view Grant and his ability. I firmly believe they would have stood their ground or given him a lesser deal if the Favre fiasco wasn't happening at the same time. Ted Thompson had all of the leverage and Grant really only played half of a season. He deserved more money, but not what he got paid.

Tramon deserves a raise, but I hope this doesn't become a trend. And of course the agent is going to bring up Grant because it's the same situation really and he's a teammate. I just don't want everyone to come forward asking for more money before they deserve it. Tramon deserves it more than Grant ever did.

Packer fandom has become the whiniest bunch of malcontents I hear from in the NFL. Lions fans handle their joke of a GM better than we handle our GM who won NFL executive of the year a few years ago.

To be fair, Lions fans have much more experience coping with a joke of a GM. Just my 2cents:

1. Tend to agree Ted Thompson should have been better prepared with the DL. It was obvious Kabeer was decling and had a huge contract, they should have released and resigned him or just let him go. His money could have been used in free agency. As often as Harrell has been injured, both college and pro, counting on him was just not very wise. However, the rash of injuries was extemely high so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

2. Totally agree, the only D staff I liked at all under Sanders was Washington.

3. I'll never understand a GM's reluctance to talk directly to an employee/plalyer. What a mess Companies would be if they all operated their business this way. When you communicate through a second party things get twisted, taken out of context, miscommunicted, misunderstood and there's no chance to immediately clear those things up between the 2 parties. Talking directly at least gives the parties a chance.

4. The Oline has been a major dissappiontment considering all the relatively high draft choices that have been spent with not appreciable results.

5. I'll reserve my judgement of Grant for this year with a full training camp. Part of the problem is #4.

I think they should take the opportunity to reward Tramon for what he has done. Set up properly it can benefit both parties, sign him now for less money and he gets more money immediately, both parties of course have to be realistic. This even though I'm not a big Tramon fan, at least not yet.

1) Yes, it was Ted Thompson 's fault. I was initially mad at him about the Corey Williams thing, but then learned his reasonings and understood them. The problem wasn't letting Williams go, it was thinking Bustin could replace him. That's where the problem was.

When Jenkins went down and it was clear KGB lost a step, the whole D fell apart. The LBs all looked worn out by the end of the game and our DBs were overwhelmed, because we couldn't stop the run and we couldn't put any pressure on the QB.

2) Agreed.

3) Agreed. It was everybody's fault and it was nobody's fault. 'Twas just a mess. Nobody won that mess.

4) Our OL leaves a lot to be desired. Blame goes to TT, the Coaching staff, pretty much everybody. I was cringing every time Aaron Rodgers took a hit, and I'm quickly becoming a HUGE Aaron Rodgers fan because despite how bad our OL was, he looked spectacular.

5) Agreed.

So we finish 5th in offense and the "0" line not good enough?

The way some of you guys talk we finished 25th. So much for things starting up front.

Sanders WAS the right move at the time after we had just gone thru three defensive coordinators in four years. Nobody was complaining when we came on strong in the second half of '06 and kicked tail in '07.

Besides all of this you guys are talking about decisions the COACH makes in many cases here and not the GM. McCarthy was hired by Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy ultimately retained Sanders. At the end of each season it was HE who did the evlauations of HIS coaching staff. They were coming together as football team in the last half of '06. Do you fire him then? We were 13-3 in '07. That would be a perfect time to change the whole defense around.

I repeat. He got fired when he SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED.

Another thing. All your quotes on shuffling the "0" line came from McCarthy. I don't see Ted Thompson quoted above anywhere and he shouldn't. Those were McCarthy's decisions and his alone. Next thing you will be complaining about is why Ted Thompson has a certain player in a certain position. Something else he has nothing to do with.

So you need to decide who you want to complain about because a lot of this is outside TT's job in the first place.

The rest to me is just 20/20 hindsight "shoulda seen it coming" bunk. The whole defensive line other than Kampman played below '07. That's Pickett, Montgomery, Jolly, Cole, and the whole lot. It went from a strong rotational group to where it didn't matter what grouping was in there.

The beginning year roster gave me no fears when looking at the DL. Maybe I'm just stupid or maybe your looking at something after it's over when it's so easy to make your opinions look intellegent.

Hahahahaha. New year same typical posts. I was bored today so i went back to posts from last year around this time and had to find it funny. Last year it was people complaining because we didn't sign Moss and all the blame was put on Brett for us losing the championship game. This year its bitching because Ted Thompson didn't sign anyone and the reason we lost last year was because of the O-Line or defense.

The part i did find interesting is all the people that posted how much depth this team had going into last year.

Here go back and do some reading it is quite amusing.

http://packershome.com/index.php?name=ForumsPro&file=viewtopic&t=1191

This next one you can use it for this year just change a few of the names of players. It's Ted Thompson press conference before the season started. He gets asked alot of questions and really never answers any of them.

http://packershome.com/index.php?name=ForumsPro&file=viewtopic&t=1427

Like i said it was interesting to read what people wrote coming off a 13-3 season to what the same exact eople are now saying about a team that was 6-10

Rodgers was sacked 34 times. That's not acceptable.

Sure, in the beginning games, he was holding the ball too long. But as the season went on, he started improving his release and the blame for his sacks fell more on the OL.

Plus, the OL failed to open up the holes. They were inconsistent.

The reason we were 5th in Offense was simply Rodgers, Jennings, and Driver were spectacular. Had we had a decent OL...

It's not all Mike McCarthy 's fault. It's both. Ted Thompson supplies the players, Mike McCarthy coaches them.

As for the rest, I already said I agree with you so I'm assuming you're talking about the other posters. Except for the DL part. As for the hindsight, I was saying this BEFORE the '08 season was on its way. I didn't trust Bustin to fill Williams shoes and I complained about it in '08, so in my particular case, it wasn't hindsight. It was at the moment.

And I specifically remember people saying "things will be ok" and trying to sweep things under the rug and making me out to be a whiner. Turns out, I was RIGHT.
