Only ONE Packer gets a pass from that NYG CG - Donald Driver. He came to PLAY, everyone else was outdone, including MM. I was a HUGE Mike McCarthy fan in '07, but Coughlin outsmarted him, as Coughlin went on to outsmart Belichick in the SB.

As I told Snap (Giants fan who used to post here, really cool guy, hope he comes back), congrats go to the Giants. They simply outplayed us. Except Donald Driver. Had we had 22 Donald Drivers that day, we would have won.

Ron Wolf got so incredibly lucky with the Brett pick. He got lucky to the point of it being a GD miracle. Brilliant move? Bullshit. It was either stupid or arrogant, imo. Favre showed arm strength, and that was it. What he had shown was less than Brian Brohm, which is an excellent example for comparison. Favre's first pass in Atlanta was a touchdown, to be sure...unfortunately it would be for the opposition. No one had a clue where the ball was going when he put it up in the air, including himself. Favre was a drunk and lazy, but I suspect that Wolf didn't know about that part.

The equivalent would be if someone offered us their 1st round pick for Brohm right now. Anyone on this site going to say, "Oh NO! ...He's the next Brett Favre!" Don't do THAT trade! 2nd round pick (Favre was 33rd pick, I believe) The biggest difference between the two is that apparently Brohm isn't a drunk or lazy. They were both third-string quarterbacks after their first year.

God looks out for drunks and fools, and it's obvious God was smiling on Ron and the Green Bay Packers that day.

If Ted ever pulled that kind of shit, everyone would run him out on a rail long before he could be proven right or wrong.

"dfosterf" wrote:

The point of being a GM is to identify players you feel will develop one day.

Wolf felt that with Favre. It has nothing to do with being lucky. Being a GM is a hit and miss game so I guess you can argue everyone is lucky, but Wolf wouldn't of given up a first round pick for Favre if he didn't feel he would develop into a solid starting quarterback.

The end result was Ron Wolf was right. He was right about a lot of things and made the two biggest moves of the 90's in trading for Brett Favre and signing Reggie White. He also hired a future Hall of Fame Head Coach.

You can argue that Favre may not of been the QB he was if it wasn't for Ron Wolf bringing him to GB and Favre getting under the coaching of Mike Holmgrem whom is one of the best QB coaches I think ever.

Brian Brohm and Brett Favre are actually two different situations IMO. Brohm doesn't have near the arm strength Favre had coming out either. Actually Matthew Stafford has an arm similar to Favre's.

The difference is Stafford is highly touted and Favre was as well before his car accident, but that obviously held him back his Senior Year.

Favre fell because of an accident.

Brohm fell because of poor play.

If Ted Thompson does get things back on course, you could look at his gamble going with Aaron Rodgers in the same light as Wolf going with Brett Favre. Both found the QB's they wanted to be the guy for their team and both went with them.

The difference is though Wolf found better players in different ways. So far Thompson has relied squarely on the draft outside of a few guys.

Sanders WAS the right move at the time after we had just gone thru three defensive coordinators in four years. Nobody was complaining when we came on strong in the second half of '06 and kicked tail in '07.

I just don't think he should have been hired at all. Anyone can make a decent defense with enough talent. He never had good in game adjustments and his scheme was way too simple. I never was comfortable with him at the helm. Just my opinion.

Another thing. All your quotes on shuffling the "0" line came from McCarthy. I don't see Ted Thompson quoted above anywhere and he shouldn't. Those were McCarthy's decisions and his alone. Next thing you will be complaining about is why Ted Thompson has a certain player in a certain position. Something else he has nothing to do with.

So you need to decide who you want to complain about because a lot of this is outside Ted Thompson's job in the first place.

I should clarify I guess. Mike McCarthy definitely deserves most of the blame. I just think Ted Thompson definitely advised him the offseason with some ideas about the o-line troubles.

What do you think he did wrong in '08? Just curious.

So we finish 5th in offense and the "0" line not good enough?

The way some of you guys talk we finished 25th. So much for things starting up front.

"zombieslayer" wrote:

Rodgers was sacked 34 times. That's not acceptable.

Sure, in the beginning games, he was holding the ball too long. But as the season went on, he started improving his release and the blame for his sacks fell more on the OL.

Plus, the OL failed to open up the holes. They were inconsistent.

The reason we were 5th in Offense was simply Rodgers, Jennings, and Driver were spectacular. Had we had a decent OL...

It's not all Mike McCarthy 's fault. It's both. Ted Thompson supplies the players, Mike McCarthy coaches them.

As for the rest, I already said I agree with you so I'm assuming you're talking about the other posters. Except for the DL part. As for the hindsight, I was saying this BEFORE the '08 season was on its way. I didn't trust Bustin to fill Williams shoes and I complained about it in '08, so in my particular case, it wasn't hindsight. It was at the moment.

And I specifically remember people saying "things will be ok" and trying to sweep things under the rug and making me out to be a whiner. Turns out, I was RIGHT.

"warhawk" wrote:

You can't piece meal success or failure on segments of an offense and especially omit the OL from the equation. There are several other teams with good QB's and WR's that could not put those kind of numbers up. I thought the "0" line held up very well against some of the best teams out there. They blew Carolina out in the second half of that game and scored plenty of points to win most ballgames. Somebody was blocking somebody when Driver and Jennings were catching passes and Grant's running for over a grand.

It was MM's philosophy from day one to get all the young OL to learn multiple positions. The result of this was it caused multiple position changes when injuries occured. I believe he understands these young guys would be further along today had he not loaded up on them like that.

Lastly, your fortune telling was greatly enhanced by Jenkins going down and the rest of the DL going to sleep and not a single one approaching the way they played a year earlier.

You've had a great rotation with a lot of success and lose one guy with Williams. I kind of understand why he didn't see the sky falling. It was a good call on your part but Jenkins in there would have made a huge impact on those results. It sure did in the first four games. Like night and day the way they performed after that Vikes game.

Looking at the beginning of '08 it's hard to put a lot on TT. The Packers looked prime after '07 and most out there had them with the ability to make a good run. The big IF was Arod who turned out to be the last guy they needed to worry about.

When you have a team as young as we were and are and see that kind of success it looks more like the sky is the limit vs. the sky is falling.

Looking BACK NOW it's obvious that teams caught up to Sanders because he didn't have an inovative bone in his body and ran the same schemes from the Bates days. I really don't blame Ted Thompson though in that we had won what? Twenty one of the last twenty something games going into last year?

It's obvious it took eight real solid players on the DL to make that defense affective and Sanders had no answers when the numbers dwindled and he wasn't afforded that luxury.

We now have one of the best and most experienced defensive coaching staffs in the NFL and I am not nearly as worried about the ability of players to adapt to this system as some here are. They are football players and mostly good football players and this is football.

At least this year if we go down it will be a fight instead of watching the last three minutes of a game where our D line is five yards off the QB dancing with the offensive freaking line and once in a blue moon a fifth rusher which is immediately read and picked up by a TE or RB.

I agree; I'm hoping with Dom and the assistants (kevin greene whoop!)
We will have a defense worth fearing.

Last season our D was too predictable. Supposedly thats what the 3-4 does is make the D un-predictable ... ie dont know when the rush is coming. You can see that when you watch the ravens or the steelers.

I can sit back and watch our D and just see the rush coming and I'm sure the oppposing O can too hence why we sacked very little and why their QB usually picked us apart even thou we have one of the best secondaries in the league.

Yeah, we should see vast improvement in '09, but I think we're going slightly off topic when we bring in the Coaching strengths/weaknesses in this particular thread.

I only tried to address what Ted Thompson was responsible. He's responsible for personnel. I'm hoping in '09, we beef up the lines on both sides of the ball. If he drafts BPA, I'm hoping he does only a limited BPA, like for example, we don't need another WR. If we use one of our first few picks on a WR, he better be the second coming of Randy Moss or I'm going to be pissed.

OL/DL should be priorities, and of course LB since the switch to 3-4. Maybe a DB. I'm actually not worried about our TE position or RB position, and we have our franchise QB already.
