DC is viewed on the same level as a position coach.

Correct, which means that going from position coach to DC is a lateral move. Philadelphia can easily lock up McDermott.
Whether McDermott is the ideal candidate or not (I myself view this option with a strong measure of suspicion), how long are we willing to postpone bringing in our new defensive staff? The draft is only a few months away. I want Thompson, McCarthy, and the defensive staff to put their heads together as soon as possible. I want them all on the same page, so that we enter the draft with a unified strategy. Every day we delay hiring a quality candidate is one less day they have to get accustomed to each other.
Don't get me wrong. I'm NOT advocating that we rush through things for the sake of change. I'm only saying we shouldn't hold out for pipe dreams. If we have a qualified candidate waiting to be picked up, there's no point in waiting for the guy who may ultimately be locked down by the Eagles anyway.
It's conceivable that the reason Williams is floating the rumors of "strong interest" in the New Orleans job is simply that Green Bay hasn't expressed enough interest yet. It's like the girl who flirts with your best friend just to make you jealous -- to see where she truly stands with you.
Green Bay should act, one way or other. Either sign Williams or cut him loose.
