I do think we should still get Orakpo if he is there in the draft and we are a 3-4 defense. He is said to be able to be a hybrid DE/LB in the NFL.

I think Everett Brown of Florida State is even more likely right now. He'd be a nice fit. If Aaron Maybin comes out then that could bump Brian Orakpo down to Green Bay. Jerry Hughes of TCU is another excellent "tweener"

This draft is loaded with them.

I read on nationalfootballpost that the Packers are committed to turning to a 3-4 team so take that for what it's worth. It came from Michael Lombardi. Might of been posted, but worth noting either way since they've been on top of the story.

We should be able to find a tweener with ease if we go to a 3-4. I think the guy we need to target though is Terrence Cody out of 'Bama. If he declares he'd be an ideal nose for the defense, and we could kick Pickett and Jolly out to the 5 technique. If we're gonna keep some 4-3 looks then Jenkins can stay, but if not, I'm sure there's a Tampa 2 team out there that would love to have him as an under tackle. Kampman (as much as we love him) would have monster trade value too. 4-3 ends go for a premium is this league, and if we're going to a 3-4 then we should try to get a king's ransom for Kampman to help retool the defense. Barnett likely has to leave too, although (unlike a lot of ppl here), I think Hawk can play ILB in a 34.

Should be a fun offseason if we do switch schemes on defense.

Kampman and Jenkins will be on the Packers 2009 roster -- regardless of the system. This isn't necessarily an endorsement of their skills in a 3-4 system (although I think Jenkins' history at DT combined with his size and ability would make him effective as a 3-4 DE). Rather, it's a statement that the Packers will NOT get rid of two of their best defensive players.

You can take that to the bank.

Yes, I think Cullen Jenkins could be effective in a 3-4 as DE...He's the perfect size for it. Right around 300 pounds...

I don't think he would pick a coach that sucks personally 🙂

One thing I do like about Mike Nolan is he knows how to dress on the field. I give him that much.

Adam Schefner is reporting that Mike Nolan will be in Green Bay on Thursday so this is getting closer.

I agree about Kampman and Jenkins and I think people look on paper and think of Cullen Jenkins as a 3-4 DE, but in reality I'm not sure if he's strong enough to do it. We'll see though.

None the less I think Green Bay could go with different packages.

4-3 Defense

DE Kampman
DT Pickett
DT Jenkins/Jolly
DE FA Pickup/Draft Pick

LB Hawk
LB Bishop
LB Barnett

3-4 Defense

DE Jolly
DT Pickett or FA Pick up/Draft Pick
DE Jenkins/Pickett

OLB FA Pickup/Draft Pick
ILB Barnett/ Bishop
MLB Hawk/ Chillar
OLB FA Pickup/Draft Pick/Poppinga

Secondary doesn't change

It's tough, but workable. They could also get Kampman in at inside backer on the 3-4 at times and just tell him to fill this gap if it's a run or go get the QB if it's a pass. Sounds to easy, but a lot of teams do types of things like that.

When exactly did Nolan interview? And beyond improving his odds of landing the St. Louis position, was Moss retained largely to satisfy the Rooney Rule?

"Since69" wrote:

One counterexample does not a good rule make. I'm sure there had been black head coaches prior to the Rooney Rule. I doubt the Rule has increased the hiring of black coaches with statistical significance.

In my opinion, the Rooney Rule simply promotes window dressing and -- let's face it -- hypocrisy. It encourages teams to bring in black candidates for perfunctory interviews, whether or not they have any real intention of hiring them. If I were black, I'd consider it an insult to be brought in for an interview on the basis of my skin color. If I were the token Rooney Rule candidate, I'd probably turn down the position with derision. I'd want to earn the job on the basis of my merits.

Stop patronizing minority coaching candidates (and if we're honest with ourselves, we'll admit this is exactly what the Rule does). Let teams bring in whoever they want for interviews. If they want to be assholes and disqualify candidates based on their skin color alone, that's their own loss.

I've talked to quite a few fellow black students who agree with me.
