The Green Bay Packers roster will take shape by the end of the month. Their 53-man cut day is Aug. 31, just two days after the team’s final preseason game against the Chiefs. That means in roughly the next three weeks the Packers’ roster will be reduced from 89 players to 53, leaving 36 players currently on the roster out of work.

Currently, I see four veteran players that could be surprise roster cuts this year.

John Kuhn
D.J.-Williams
Jarrett Bush
Mike Neal

Neal isn't going anywhere unless he suffers another substantial injury soon.

I find all of those players speculated upon to be in real trouble to make this roster.

Kuhn you can see, with his advancing age, higher salary, diminishing effectiveness as a lead blocker.

Bush you can see, as he is climbing up there in age as well, and has proven to offer little in the secondary on a consistent basis. He has stayed on this team by being a STs star. He may be the toughest call to make here.

Neal, I find his being in this mix pretty interesting. You have to figure, he was busted on a drug suspension for PEDs. Now, he comes in at a far lower weight. Maybe they are in fact thinking that this player is not what was advertised on draft day 3 years ago. That is entirely possible, and I had not previously considered that. The opposite could be true, however, that they really like him and that he may be one of the DL locks, with what should be some better speed. But, I have to admit his loss of mass had me a bit troubled, as we were looking to get bigger and faster on D. Maybe he is a lock on the DL, and maybe he is not...

Then again, maybe he becomes one of those players who fits the bigger/faster profile at a completely different position, OLB. There is so much going on with this guy. I hope he can make a great impact on improving this defense, however he is used.

I like Kuhn, but I don't think he has been as effective at both running and blocking the last year or so as he once had been. I know what you are saying Dulak. He does bring a great veteran presence amongst the other points you mention, and is super tight with Rodgers too. This will be a really close call.

We hear Ted and Mike repeatedly stat they have 3 teams, offense, defense AND special teams and they weigh each of them the same in value. (Now it may not really be true but that is what they say publicly.) It is huge when Bush gets down field and can down the punt at the 3, 5 or 10 yard line. It is equally valuable when he takes on two blockers and frees up someone else to get down field and make the play. We love it when Raji or Pick take on two blockers and then allow someone else to make the play the same needs to0 be given to the CB everyone loves to hate because he is not that great of a cb.

IF they have someone younger who can do what Bush does he could be gone. Keep in mind it takes more than blinding speed to fight your way down field while getting mugged by two guys. Someone younger and faster may not have the savvy that Bush has shown.

If all Bush does is excel in ST then he will stay on the team.

to go along with what you said wpr - I started to pipe down about bush as last season got underway; seeing him gun it down to the 1-10 yardline to down some balls down there.

He is a veteran, and indeed a star on STs.

He made a bunch of gaffes at CB his first few seasons in GB, but seems to have gotten better. My meaning was that he never broke through to win a starting position back there. For whatever reason.

Kuhn will stay, the only other player that knows the offense better than Kuhn on this team is Rodgers.

Neal.... Come on that's crazy. He's got way to much versatility now, and pass rush ability to be let go.

Williams will probably end up making this team again... I mean who is better than him? Taylor? Quarless? Bostick? Stoneburner? None of them has proved to me yet that they are a better candidate than Williams. He actually didn't have a bad game last Friday, except for those drops. The way I see the TEs going out is: Finley, Williams, Mulligan, Quarless. Taylor/Quarless and Bostick are gonna fight for that last spot.

Bush is the most likely for me to get cut. I think it's time to move on, unless theres nothing behind the 3 safteys or if House stinks it up even more. Ecspecially with Nixon, Smith, and Means catching on.
