There has been a lot of news worth following on the Packers offensive line this offseason. Another storyline up front that should develop further once training camp heats up is who will "win' the sixth-man slot on the offensive line. I put "win' in parentheses because, technically, if you're the sixth man on the line, it means [...]

It seems to me that the Packers have kept 8, maybe 9, maybe even 10 O Linemen in the past. I doubt they limit it to seven this year. Who will be #6 can't be answered, of course, until it is known who is #5.

If there is indeed a sixth man like in basketball, it has to be somebody flexible. Barclay seems to fit that description. In a perfect scenario, Sherrod starts and flourishes at RT, but that is a pretty shaky assumption at this point. I think they find a way to keep Sitton, Bulaga, EDS, Lang, Sherrod, Newhouse, Barclay, Bakhtiari, Lewis, and Tretter. Yeah, I know that's ten names. But between IR, PUP, practice squad, and active roster, I think they all stay around.

As TX says they don't know who will start so it is hard to project who the backups will be.

It doesn't appear to be Tretter.

It looks like he broke his ankle in practice and is going to be out about 6 months.

I'm more concerned with the first five, than the sixth.

Normally passing teams take 7 OL into a game (unless they use them at TEs some of the time then 😎.

As for the 6th man, I think that's clear. Barclay is the only guy they're practicing at T, G and C. Now reports are he's struggling with the snap every so often so he might not be the back-up Center, but Mike McCarthy did say Lang can play C and/or they could have another guy for Center.

Of course if you're one of the top 5 guys then you can't be the 6th guy. So if Barclay makes it into the top 5 then whom ever he beat out is the 6th guy.
