Up until I bought our Toyota last year I bought most GM or one of the big 3. Since owning the Sienna.. I will more likely than not, buying another Toyota. To me, the vehicle design and quality surpass the others by that much.

And yes.. My Sienna is produced in Ohio.

In fact , as the latest ranking of cars and trucks "Made in America" shows, it's not always Big 3 models with the most parts and labor coming from here in the US.

According to Cars.com, here are the "most" American made models for sale right now.

Toyota Camry (last ranking 1)
Honda Accord (last ranking 2)
Chevy Malibu (last ranking 5)
Ford Explorer (no last ranking)
Honda Odyssey (last ranking 6)
Toyota Sienna (last ranking 10)
Jeep Wrangler (last ranking 9)
Chevy Traverse (no last ranking)
Toyota Tundra (last ranking 8)
GMC Acadia (no last ranking)

If this list and the fact half of the models are from Japanese brands surprises you, it shouldn't.

Toyota and Honda have long built most of what they sell in the U.S. at plants in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana (among other places). And most of the parts in those cars are made here in North America.

That wasn't sleazy - just silly. And far less annoying than most GEICO commercials...

I could care less about the particular citizenship of those who make the vehicle, design the vehicle, etc. I care about whether the vehicle will do what I want it to do, how I want it to do it, and when I want it to do it. I don't believe that worker quality and nationality are correlated. I believe there are greatly skilled, highly motivated, high integrity, caring, etc. American autoworkers, American engineers, and American managers, and I believe there are incompetent, lazy, worthless American autoworkers, American engineers, and American managers.

And I have no idea which ones were involved in making a particular vehicle by a particular company. So I'd rather just rely on the market. If a company and its employees are doing things right, it will succeed on the market. If it's asking for government assistance, it probably is screwing up in what it makes.

Now, honesty compels me to admit that I do pay more attention to commercials with attractive women in them than I do to ones with men in them. (I also pay more attention to commercials with dogs in the them than ones with cats or babies in them.) But to me the Scion ad doesn't have attractive women in it. It has bimbos.

This is the kind of attractive woman commercial I like:

Best car I've ever owned was a 1968 Chevelle (not the IMO overrated 396 SS either, but the 327.) I drive a 12 year old Saturn. But I'm very skeptical of anything GM now.

And I've been a GEICO customer since long before either the caveman or the gecko. Before it called itself GEICO, in fact.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

I'm not sure I care much about where the car was pieced together. Are they made by American citizens and does the corporate money stay in America or does it go over seas with some tax free deal?

American made, with American parts, by American citizens and the money stays in America. That would be the best case scenario for America.

This topic is a lot more complex than buy American, made in America. First of all, you have to examine union labor in America and whether or not they priced themselves right into the unemployment line. Should a line worker in the manufacturing plant with no secondary education make twice the money of a teacher that is forced to pay a full year's salary for a brand new overpriced car? There is a lot wrong with that whole dynamic.

But on the other hand, should these greedy corporations be able to make their cars in a foreign country on virtual slave labor and then bring them back without paying any high taxes to get them back in the country? I'm sure Mitt thinks so!

We have two vehicles - 2009 Chevy Silverado and 2004 Honda Pilot. Right now the Pilot has 85K on it and the pickup has 28K. I am almost certain that I will be towing the Pickup to the junkyard before the Honda. We believe in driving vehicles into the ground, so the auto industry doesn't necessarily like us or the bankers for that matter.

As for the commercial - I like bimbos spilling milk and creamy donuts on themselves, but the commercial wouldn't convince me to buy the car.

Heh. I'm like Dakota. I drive a car until the transmission dies. Then I junk it.

I totally get what Wade is saying. But for me, I'd rather protect American labor IF it's anywhere close.

I take what Consumer Reports says seriously. They test everything and they can't be bought as they refuse corporate money. Toyota's quality has declined recently and Honda has remained consistently good. Toyota though kicks so much ass that despite their quality declining, they still put out good cars. Now Ford is totally kicking ass. They're neck and neck with the Japanese right now. Don't take my word for it. Subscribe to Consumer Reports.

So let's say hypothetically that I'm down to two cars - both with an 89 rating. I'll take the American made one over the foreign made one. And of course as Pack93z posted in his graph above, there are some Japanese models that are very American made. And yes, VR is right. There are some American models that aren't very American made. The thing that sucks now is you actually have to check.

Now back to the ad. It's cute. I'm not offended by it. I'm totally with Wade though about that Cadillac ad. Now, THAT is sexy. The Scion ad is just cute. Sexy > cute.

The ads that I can't stand to see are the erectile dysfunction ads. If I want anything off the TV, it's those ads. If you need drugs to get it up, I don't want to hear about it. Seriously. TMI, and get those ads off the air already.

dfosterf (10h) : Michael Macelvie- NFL teams know how to draft- Why don"t they?
dfosterf (10h) : Youtube
Zero2Cool (15h) : Packers were not selected for the 2025 Hall of Fame game.
dfosterf (17h) : PFOW Out of our division would be a good thing imo
Zero2Cool (19h) : Jameson Williams is done at 24 years old? What? He's a WR, not QB. I'm missing something here haha
wpr (19h) : Tomorrow is almost here.
packerfanoutwest (19h) : would you want him if Pack needed a back up qb?
packerfanoutwest (20h) : JW is done......stick a fork in him
Zero2Cool (21h) : You should. He goes to AFC that helps Packers.
packerfanoutwest (23-Apr) : don't care
Zero2Cool (22-Apr) : Lions shopping Jameson Williams?
packerfanoutwest (22-Apr) : Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst says Green Bay’s roster can win, even without adding anyone in the draft.
Zero2Cool (22-Apr) : It's a poor design. New site has SignalR like our gameday chat
wpr (22-Apr) : Ah today's Shout was very quick to post.
wpr (22-Apr) : now 3
Zero2Cool (22-Apr) : Who? What?
beast (22-Apr) : What is he supposed to say? He doesn't want players currently on the team?
Martha Careful (21-Apr) : meh

dfosterf (21-Apr) : Justice Musqueda over at Acme Packing put up an excellent synopsis of the Packers 1st round options this am
wpr (19-Apr) : 5 days
beast (18-Apr) : 6 days
wpr (17-Apr) : 7 days
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
