There have been some good posts in here and I think this article by Brian Carriveau  sums it up pretty well (and falls much along the lines of what you all have been talking about.

What I really like about the article is he points out that it isn't necessarily a tag and trade, but more like a trade and tag. A team would agree to terms with the Packers first and THEN the tag would be placed. With that said, if a tag is placed on Flynn and not Finley, then maybe a deal has been worked out with Finley and a team (I am going with Washington or Cleveland) has offered something for Flynn.

Then we could all be happy and our greed will be met.

Flynn was a hot topic before the season and I think this extra season he had with Green Bay to go through McCarthy's QB school and sit behind Rodgers has sculpted him into an even better option for teams.

High percentage chance if a tag is placed on Flynn, then a team didn't want to wait and risk losing him in free agency. <--best case scenario and a very desperate team). Its all a "what if" game, but fun to play. I really think Ted Thompson will just let Flynn test the market and stick with the compensatory pick.

unfortunately, the talks of Finley and his contract put a nice damper on the fun...or does it just add to it?

I don't think Finley has as much leverage as he thinks he has. All we have to do is play a highlights reel of his drops. As silly as it sounds, there's truth to that.

Finley - I want....

Ted - You're not a top 5 TE. (whips out the stat sheet)

Finley - D'oh!

The rules have changed slightoy from when the Packers tagged and traded Corey Williams. That though is the precedent that should be considered as well as the Casell trade to the Chiefs.

They can tag, then sign,

They can tag and trade(up to trade deadline) with cap hit or

They can release and get a third round pick in 2013.

How Ted navigates this legally under the new CBA will be an interesting challenge.

Big picture to remember is that the Packers had a 7th round pick they developed into a good back up QB and they will be getting a a more valuable draft pick in "profit".

Flynn's agent will be a big help. Look for crazy rumors to come out around the time of the combine.

Here is what the guys over at ProFootballFocus  had to say about this:

Cashing In

Well if Kevin Kolb can attract the type of offers he did with a far less intriguing CV than Matt Flynn (+5.5), I dread to think of the type of money the prospective free agent could draw. However, it’s important to note, that Kolb played exactly the same number of excellent games that Flynn did prior to his lucrative trade … one. Just as the ex-Eagle had his outstanding Week 6 outing against the Falcons on his resume, so now does Flynn have this game to point to. The difference was Kolb had an awful lot of dross to view as well whereas the Packers’ back-up has seen far less playing time. So without much else to go on was this performance as good as it looked on paper?

The answer is almost but not quite; 226 of his 480 yards came after the catch and, as usual, many will forget the awful decision he made with 1:56 left in the final quarter because Brandon McDonald failed to make what should have been a game winning interception.

That aside though, he made very few mistakes and threw some very accurate deep balls not least of which was the perfectly judged 40-yarder to James Jones (also on the final drive) down the right side line. He looked in command, unflustered when pressured and did little wrong. Would I give him $63 Million, or over, for five years on the basis of this? Probably not but if I had to give it to someone and the choice was only him or Kolb I’d be a lot more inclined.

Pass rush & OL. Those matter WAY more than whether Finley stays or goes.

According to Jason Wilde, and his reading of the CBA, you can use only one tag, either Franchise or Transition tag per year.

Would you rather get 14 million to sit on the bench or 7-9 million to start? I think the latter, so I'm guessing Flynn doesn't sign the contract anyways. Remember, New England franchised Matt Cassel and got a second-round pick for him. The Packers would be wise to consider this option, assuming they don't need the tag for somebody else.
