It is nextguyitis.. the fact that we can call upon 2 backs bodes well for us. Last year it was Jackson that had everyone clamoring.

Packers are lucky at RB, so far. Lucky is not the right word, fortunate I think is more apt.

I think they're both doing well.

You are not acting like Grant doing well makes you happy. In fact, the opposite seems to be true. You are only happy when he gets tackled in the backfield.

Like you hope he fails because being right is more important to you than the Packers doing well.

If that is not your intent, that is the impression you are giving.

One thing I've noticed: When we really need the rushing yards Starks always seems to be in the game. I remember I was watching the game with my friend and he kept complaining about how Starks wasn't getting the ball. I said "wait until the third quarter, he only seems to get the ball when it counts the most." Sure enough, 3 out of our first 4 plays in the third quarter are runs to Starks.

So far I'm happy with the way the two backs have been used. With Starks injury history and his explosiveness why not give him an extra breather now and then? While Grants seems like he's lost a step he is still useful. Consider: Grant always hits the hole, there's no dancing in the backfield. Grant runs straight, albeit sometimes into his own guy, but straight. He always tries to fall forward. What we have is an effective back when all we need is a carry for 1-5 yards. It gives us a short distance to go on a passing down and also helps to setup the play-action. I have never been a fan of Grant's--there are posts on this forum that detail that to an extreme--but I like him as a part of a two headed attack. He's great when teamed with a more explosive back like Starks.

I also remember reading comments from Joe Philbin stating that Starks is better in space, and significantly better than Grant running out of the shotgun. While Grant is better at identifying the blitz, Starks is better at blocking the blitzer. I also know that in the first game while the touches between the two were similar, Starks had 20-30 more snaps.

I think the running backs coach said that James Starks is better at pass blocking than Ryan Grant.

I, like evad, think that the whole “starter” designation is pretty meaningless. That said, it looks like Starks is a better runner. He’s the guy. He gets to the line of scrimmage faster than Grant, that’s the main thing I took from the Carolina game. I don’t know where I stand on the whole issue of whether he evades tacklers better. I could be convinced with some video evidence but I’m not interested enough to track it down myself. I would also like to see how McCarthy is using each runner, the different alignments, etc, and how the blocking develops in front of them. I have a feeling based on no evidence whatsoever that when Grant is in the game the blocking gets poorer. But maybe that’s just because he’s not getting to the line as quickly as Starks and by the time he gets into the fray things have broken down a bit.

I don’t agree that watching Grant run is somehow a chore. His runs have kept the offense on schedule so far this season which is all to the good. I wish McCarthy would mix runs (with both running backs) in a bit more, to tell the truth. But what do I know? Anyway, I think Grant’s boring 4.1 yards/carry (they are a boring compared to Starks, I admit) mean that when Grant is in the game it doesn’t automatically signal *PASS* to the defense. As the season progresses I think we’ll see more and more Starks and Grant in key situations when we need tough yards and when Starks is tired.

Finally, if Starks got injured in practice tomorrow (knock on wood) I think the Packers would be in pretty good shape with Grant. Not as good of shape, obviously, than if we had both backs, but certainly in better offensive shape than they were last year when Grant went down.
