Well, let's get straight to the 1st (of 2) surprises I have in store. I know some of these numbers are available elsewhere, but they may take some time to trickle in and it's good to see some more concentrated discussions taking apart various units. I hope these threads start more actual discussion than they did last year, but if not, I know people enjoy these sort of things and for me, it's definitely helped me look closer at the OL offensively.

OL Week 1 Graphics

Terrific game by this unit keep Aaron upright and paving way for a nice, complimentary rushing attack. In pass pro, tough to argue against what these guys accomplished allowing just 2 sacks, 2 hits, and 3 hurries.

Over half of the OL imperfections came at the hands of our tight ends and backs, who struggled at times to pick up the Gregg Williams blitz. Starks clearly has ground to make up in this area, even by his own self-admission. Finley didn't look particularly strong in this area either, allowing the sack (I think, someone please correct me if I'm wrong because I'll freely admit I'm not OL expert) and being late on another assignment. Of our backs and tight ends, I really thought Quarless did an outstanding job tonight in pass pro and making key blocks in the run game. If you were expecting a lot of Taylor/Williams on the field this year, I'd be surprised if either cracked more than handful of snaps all year on the LOS if both Finley and Quarless stay healthy.

Our OL looked in sync and communicating well for week 1 in the season. Our interior linemen were hitting the second level consistently. Wells and Lang, specifically worked well in tandem and were pivotal to a couple bigger runs. Bulaga was straight up dominant, handling his man with ease. I really wish we have a future LT so we can keep this guy beasting on the right side.

Like I said, nothing extensive here. Enjoy!

I looked at the link. I don't understand the part about run blocking.

When I watched the game a second time, I don't think Starks was that bad. The sack was on a play-action pass when the Saints blitzed. I thought Chris Collinsworth was being a little picky when he criticized Starks for not blocking the guy. It was play-action. Starks' first assignment on the play was to fake like he was getting the handoff. By the time he finished doing that, it was too late to block the rusher. Sometimes the defense just makes the right call, and there's nothing you can do about it. Starks did get pushed back into Rodgers on one play, and Rodgers' arm hit him when he made the throw.

I was especially happy to see Lang play well. He was the biggest question mark coming into the game.

So I guess it wasn't as obvious as I thought. The Run Blocking section of the graphic shows all of our runs, the runner, the direction, and the yards. So for example, our first run was Grant for 4 yards over RT. Our second was Grant over left end for 5 yards, our 4th was Starks up the middle for nothing. The numbers in the mini-table at the bottom is a summary and pretty self-explanatory. Within each cell though, it goes carries - yards (average). Hope that helps.

As for the Starks pass pro, RBs are always taught to ignore the playaction and make the block if it's in jeopardy. The last thing you want is to risk a sack (injury/fumble) on your QB. The PA may or may not worth and it's never worth the risk to sell out to sell it if it means jeopardizing your block. In Starks' interview this week, he even said he needs to improve on pass blocking. I'm sure he knew he messed up on that play. Starks has shown a willingness (and ability) to take on rushers. He just needs to keep his head in the film room and learn technique to execute.

On other point of note, the sack allowed on Finley was probably on Aaron for not getting the pass out on time, but that's not how these things are scored. It's tough to know who exactly was at fault on that play without knowing the protection call.

I had never heard that RBs are taught to pass protect when needed instead of faking on play-action, so when Collinsworth said that I was suspicious, even though I think Collinsworth is the best color commentator ever.

beast (17-Dec) : Despite what lies other might tell, Beast didn't hate the Winter Warnings, it felt refreshing to Beast for some reason.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : whiteout uniforms in general are pretty lame and weak. NFL greed at it's worst
Martha Careful (17-Dec) : The Viking uniforms, the whiteout uniforms specifically absolutely suck
beast (17-Dec) : Thanks Zero2Cool, looks a lot better now
beast (17-Dec) : Seems like someone has a crush on me, can't stop talking about me
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : Should be gooder now. The forum default theme went to goofy land.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : What the hell
packerfanoutwest (17-Dec) : yeah beast hates the Winter Warning Unies
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : WR Odell Beckham Jr is officially a free agent after clearing waivers.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : Packers are 6th in sacks.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : RB David Montgomery will undergo season-ending knee surgery.
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Dan Campbell on onside kick with 12 minutes left: In hindsight, wish I didn’t do that
