I was poking around my Comcast bill and found that I have a limit on my bandwidth. It's set at 250GB a month, for both upload and download combined. What a bummer. We're on day 8 of the month and I've used 60GB.

Comcast @ $59.95 + $7 modem fee (Greeley, CO)
Downloads up to 6Mbps, uploads up to 1Mbps.
Monthly total, $69.97

Time Warner @ 44.95 no modem fee (Green Bay, WI)
Downloads up to 7Mbps, uploads up to 512 Kbps
Monthly total, $49.??

I suppose one would chalk this up to the higher cost of living in CO over WI.

Used a Best Buy gift card to get a modem to eliminate that damn $7 charge.

Ubee U10C018
11.7 Mbps download, 3.20 Mbps upload

Zoom 5241
11.04 Mbps download, 3.97 Mbps upload

I can't recall downloading anything more than 2Mbps so I guess the upload and lack of modem fee balances things out for me.

@$7.00/month I've given Comcast $70, which covered the cost of the new modem, easily. In other words, wish I'd have done this from the start.

The steps are very easy.

Monthly bandwidth caps are becoming virtually ubiquitous. For many carriers the cap is at 250 GB and there is talk of many companies slashing that to 100 GB.

The explosion in smartphone and other mobile device use is stressing the internet backbone and fucking over more traditional internet users. I have no intention of ever getting a smartphone, and even if those were the only kind available, I never intend to use my phone to browse the internet.

How many people actually need or truly benefit from having internet at their fingertips wherever they go? I would venture to guess less than 1% of users. It is just one more way to keep people submerged in a cyberuniverse instead of interacting with real people around them.

We dumped Comcast last week. Well technically we still have them until the 18th of the month but don't use them. Lower price was only one of the reasons. The main one was that Comcast kept dropping service. Sometimes it was 10 times in a day. Sometimes it was only for a minute other times for more than an hour. Terribly frustrating. When we called them to see what the problem was they acted like they never heard of the issue before. I know it has been a problem for a long time as my brother has their service in another town 5 miles from me he is always calling my office asking us to do a change for a client as his office internet was down.

Frankly, I think the bigger problem is that all internet companies are affiliated with cable-television. Therein lies the problem... television is being phased out and the preferred medium of choice is becoming online on-demand services (like Netflix, youtube, etc.).

That is a big blow to companies who have invested millions in television infrastructure, rights fees, etc. As a way to continue to make enough previous levels of profit from their investments, companies like Time Warner, Comcast, Rogers and Bell (both in Canada) start setting unfair restrictions with the hope that people cut down on their on-demand online viewing, and return to watching television.

Frankly, the claims by companies with a stake in having people buy and use cable t.v. are starting to get pathetic. It is sad that companies, in response to development and progression, are resorting to restrictions on the fruits of the progression just to protect their behinds. I personally prefer to go through independently owned companies that buy bandwidth from the major players via wholesale, and then retail that at a cheaper rate with much looser bandwidth caps.
