But stories like Tramon's happen because you develop the player.. Jones was only a second year player last season.. and only got a couple games in.

Zombo will be a second year player. Walden will have another year under his belt..

I am not saying you ignore an opportunity to upgrade.. but even guys that looked like they would be good, Jerry Hughes comes to mind.. didn't do squat immediately.

I know what you mean, but if you really see this as a position of problem, you don't go ahead and take 6th, 7th rounders and UDFAs to fix it. It's just that they inexplicably keep ignoring the OLB position while the entire football world is screaming out for them to do something about it.

But, anyway, I feel like I'm pissing in cheerio's here for the sake of it. I actually like Elmore as a pick. Especially in the 6th round. We'll see what he'll bring.

The Packers as a team were 1 sack out of first place in sacks last year. The best OLB duo in the NFL, James Harrison and Lamarr Woodley combined for 20.5 sacks. Clay Matthews and our rotating cast opposite him combined for 21.5- the best in the league for sacks by an OLB crew if I'm not mistaken, despite missed-time injuries to Matthews, Jones, Zombo, Walden, and Poppinga. Robert Francois had to start a game at ROLB it got so bad.

I don't think everyone would agree with your premise that OLB is a "position of problem," especially with the presumptive starter- Zombo going from being an undrafted rookie who had to learn a new position to a 2nd year guy with some productive starts and five sacks, including one in the Super Bowl under his belt.

Despite only starting 8 games and only playing in 13, Frank Zombo was #2 in the league in sacks among rookie LBs. Only Miami's Koa Misi had more, and that was just 1/2 sack more.

Whoa. A rare occurrence indeed. Rock was actually wrong about something related to the Packers. I'm going to have to slap GLAL's nuts as well.

Slapnuts?

slapnuts-

A method of punishment and pain compliance administered by a short, sharp slap to the nutsack, either forehand or backhand, but with an open palm.

To GLAL...

But you've seen these games, right? Our OLBs opposite of Clay did very little to help the pass rush. Just recall the plays without the statistics next to them. I think they're kind of skewed in this equation. They'll get there once in a while on their own, but largely, they just come up short, regardless of which one of the OLBs we're talking about (outside of Clay, of course).

For the statistics... You have Clay on one side, someone you're going to try to avoid at all cost, maybe double him up. You have Pickett eating one or two blocks. You have Raji collapsing the middle, getting penetration up the middle like I've barely ever seen a NT doing and you have Cullen, someone who excels at rushing the passer from the 5 and the 3 technique position.

Your other OLB is bound to get some sacks, eventually.

Let me first state that Walden actually showed a slight glimmer of hope rushing the passer before he got injured, but he was getting pushed around quite easily in the running game.

But we're not going to get settled on that one, weak as it sounds. I've had this discussion on PP.O tons of times, with Ray Edwards, in my opinion, benefiting from the rest of that line.

Most of the pre-draft coverage had OLB, OT and CB right up there as our top needs. Most mock drafts had us going OLB somewhere in the first 3/4 rounds.

It's not that we can't survive with a solid rusher opposite of Clay, it's just that having a good pass rush covers up so many problems.

And we have that solid pass rush because of some amazing D-line play and the way that Dom schemes around his players. It's just another OLB would make this defense next to unstoppable. I think we'll see a drop of sacks if Cullen does indeed leave, because he makes one heck of an impact on the D-line when he's healthy in the pass rushing department. More so than any other 3-4 DE in the league, maybe.

I'm not saying it can't be upgraded. Of course it could, but Zombo looks like a player to me. I don't know who in that draft would have instantly taken his job. He outperformed most of the big name guys from last year's draft, and now he has some NFL experience under his belt.

Zombo is no Clay Matthews, but more than likely, we'll NEVER have two Clay Matthews-caliber OLBs, no matter how many draft picks we throw at the position. I think Zombo is a good one, and we have some depth with whoever makes it out of Jones, Chillar, Walden, Poppinga, Francois, and Elmore.

Here's some quality Zombo action-

Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024

dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.

Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
Zero2Cool (10-Apr) : Guessing they probably knew. Did he have cast or something on?
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : Did they know that at the time or was that something the realized afterwards?
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Van Ness played most of season with broken thumb
wpr (9-Apr) : yay

Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Who?
