Charles Woodson said he will not recruit close friend and former teammate Nnamdi Asomugha to Green Bay.
However, the newly minted world champion did say hed be open to moving from cornerback to safety to accommodate Asomugha, who is expected to be the most coveted free agent on the market.
In an interview ESPNMilwaukee.com and ESPNMadison.com, Woodson discussed the chances of reuniting with Asomugha in Green Bay. They were teammates in Oakland from 2003-05. They remain close friends, so its easy to understand why Woodson would be open to making the position switch to make room for Asomugha.
If I talked to Dom (Capers) and he thought that was the best thing for us to win another championship I would do it, Woodson said. This thing is about winning. If this would have been my fifth year in the league I probably would have told you hell no but at this point if that was going to get me another championship why wouldnt I?
Still, Woodson said he is not pushing the idea nor does he have a clue where Asomugha will end up.
Im not doing any recruiting, Woodson said. Weve texted a few times about winning a Super Bowl. Nothing really about his future I dont know whats going on about him and Oakland or anything else. When I look at our team and I look at young Sam (Shields) and Tramon, Wheres he going to fit? How is that possibly going to work out? I think that would be the first question you have to ask.
I know Green Bay has been mentioned a lot in connection to Asomugha and thats because of his relationship with Woodson. But Im not sure Green Bay should be considered a favorite to land Asomugha. Woodson is right. The Packers are loaded at cornerback and the team is not known for being consistent free spenders on the open market. In the end, I could see another team (which very well could be Oakland) giving Asomugha better deal. But it is interesting to know Woodson is willing to do what it takes to reunite with Asomugha.
