"Amazing" -- that's it? What is that supposed to mean? Amazingly good, amazingly bad, amazingly boring, amazingly theatrical?

Gee, you could at least have posted the text. You expect me to waste time listening to the clown again?

musing further about things....perhaps we should have Kevin make a rule that all threads about political nincompoops go in the back alley. 🙂

It was one of the best speeches by a politician that I have heard. He did a great job intimately portraying the victims who lost their lives, he uplifted hearts by celebrating the heroes, and he challenged everyone to be better.

And exactly why ia it an occasion for a national politician to be speaking?

I know it makes me sound like an uncompassionate asshole, but I don't understand why people think these sorts of tragedies are "national" concerns.

I was in Iowa City several years ago -- with a good friend who was in the actual room, when a graduate student went on a rampage against his advisor and various others. That was of personal interest and deep local interest and concern. And it certainly was a tragedy, on many levels. But was it truly worthy of national news (as it became)? I don't think so.

I'm glad he gave a great speech. And giving speeches is one function of the President. But it seems to me he should be using his great speeches on matters of national and international concern. Not on personal and local tragedies.

The only thing -- maybe -- that makes this a national concern is that a congresscritter was involved. But I'm not convinced that that gives the matter Presidential gravitas. It was not a political attack on Congress, after all. It wasn't an attempt to put an airplane into the white house or to blow up a federal building. It was a heinous act by a single individual.

I just think there are better things for a President to be doing.

Agree with the sentiment in most cases but not this one. Like you said, a congressman was attacked (and a federal judge killed). Why shouldn't the President be involved?

Wade, I was bothered by how contrived the whole thing felt during all of the speakers prior to Obama, plus the crowd seemed strangely raucous for such a solemn event.

I also thought the president of the student body was going to faint. Holy shit was she nervous!

I dunno.

Was it an attack on the government, or an attack on one congressman with another victim who happened to be a government employee (the judge)?

Was it an attack on America, or an attack on individuals who happened to be American?

Like it or not, the default interprettation when the President speaks is going to be that he is speaking in terms of national interest. What he speaks about, when he speaks, regardless of what he says or how well he says it, what he says is going to be interpreted as a statement about or on behalf of the nation and its interest.

And I'm not convinced that every time a federal employee (even a congresswoman, even a judge) gets shot, it becomes a matter of national interest.

Any more than it is a matter of national interest when Elvis or Michael or Anna Nicole die. And any of those three had more national influence than either that congresswoman or that judge had.

Mucky Tundra (5h) : @DavidBearmanPFN · 18h Vegas has watched Will Levis for 3 weeks and installed them as a 1-point favorite in Miami next week. Let that sink
Mucky Tundra (7h) : Martha, they did play much better with Dalton yesterday
Zero2Cool (7h) : Test results on Sam Darnold’s knee showed a knee bruise and no structural damage. He is not expected to miss any time.
Martha Careful (10h) : Not with Dalton apparently
Mucky Tundra (23-Sep) : Not sure what to make of the NFC South so far this season (outside of the Panthers being a dumpster fire)
