thanks for the replies . very thought provoking, with arguments for both sides eloquently put. now if only we can get our politicians to behave in the same way . i won't be holding my breath on that one.

I got a degree in History, but not just the degree, I'm a long-long student in it. Before studying History, I was a liberal and supported gun control. I've flip-flopped because of the research I've done (but I'm still a liberal in some other ways completely unrelated to gun control).
The reason is simple - an armed society cannot have a dictatorship. If a dictator tries to take power, we go guerrilla and we all know who wins guerrilla wars.
Europe has a strong history of genocide. When bad things happened, leaders point fingers at scapegoats. Arm the scapegoats and you have a serious problem rounding them up and executing them because they shoot back.
