The Green Bay Packers activated rookie running back James Starks from the physically unable to perform list Tuesday and released linebacker Robert Francois to make room on the roster.
Starks, who was selected by the Packers in the sixth round of the 2010 draft (193rd overall) out of Buffalo, has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since August. He finished his career at Buffalo as the school's all-time rushing leader with 3,140 yards in three seasons, even though he missed his senior season after needing shoulder surgery in August 2009.
He tweaked his right hamstring in conditioning early in training camp.
Starks adds depth to a running back unit that has been down to Brandon Jackson and John Kuhn since Ryan Grant was lost for the season in Week 1.
Francois, who was signed to the active roster off the practice squad Oct. 13, played in three games.
The Packers also released safety Michael Greco from the practice squad.
Harris clears: The National Football Post reported that veteran cornerback Al Harris, who was released by the Packers Monday, cleared waivers.
According to the report, Harris' agent, Jack Bechta, was in negotiations with multiple teams. He declined to reveal them.
