I would of never given the punter credit for winning a game till Mike Scifers was the #1 reason the Chargers beat the Colts a couple of years ago placing almost every punt inside the 10

I'm glad you brought that up, I remember exactly what you're talking about though never would have thought about it.

Miller raises good points about the values of the field position. However, punters are generally a dime a dozen, even just to get a servicable one, so although the extra 10+yards/punt would be REALLY nice, I'm not sure that a 5th is a good price.

I guess the is all moot now that the deadline has passed. But I'm really not sure why you guys are hell bent against sending a 5th round pick for the best punter in the NFL.

Our past 5th round picks:
2010: Andrew Quarless, Marshall Newhouse
2009: Quinn Johnson, Jamon Meredith
2008: Breno Giacomini
2007: David Clowney
2006: Ingle Martin, Tony Moll
2005: Junius Coston, Michael Hawkins

Some real blue chippers, eh?

Punters are not a dime a dozen: Jeremy Kapinos, Chris Bryan, Tim Masthay, Derrick Frost, BJ Sander, Jon Ryan, Bryan Barker, Chris Bryan, Durant Brooks. These guys all sucked (Ryan less than others, but still routinely out punted coverage).

In a game of inches, field position matters!!!

end of rant.

I'm not sure that list is accurate, I know Quarless was picked in the fourth and Martin in the sixth.

Also, this is the first time I am hearing about Ryan routinely out punting his coverage. If there is anything you can pin on him as a weakness, it is that he wasn't exactly excelling in corner-punts. But still, that weakness was no reason to get rid of a perfectly capable punter and holder.

Masthay is the holder right now. That wins him some points, despite his terrible punting performance.

And I'm not sure why the Raiders would trade their punter for a fifth... we're proof that getting a decent punter is not exactly a sure thing.

Masthay is bad. He's not as bad as Frost because when Masthay shanks punts they still travel more than 30 yards and get more than 3 seconds of hang time.

Does anyone know who Chris Bryan is doing in Tampa? Perhaps we let the right punter go? I think Ted and co. will keep Masthay in the hopes that he grows, because there aren't all that attractive alternatives out there right now.

Not sure Chutz but I think he was just picked up as a free agent after playing CFL ball here in Winnipeg for 2 years setting a record for punt average

When do we stop with the carousel of players and start addressing the coaching staff.

Yearly we deal with special teams problems and offensive line issues.. yet we never seem to address the guys that coach those positions.

Sure.. get rid of Masthay.. insert another guy.. but when we can't get consistency out of the next.. whom then?

Sooner or later, you take a guy like Ryan, coach him up to deliver the consistency you demanded at the time.. or fix the coaching problem.

We preach consistency and availability from our players.. yet we seemly ignore the root issues.. that is an Mike McCarthy problem at this point. Not addressing the breakdowns upon his staff. IMO of course.

And I agree about Oakland not giving up Lechler for a 5th. I'm just saying I would have no problem with Ted Thompson offering it.

Bryan is 29th in net punting, while Masthay is 32. Bryan does have 7 punts inside the 20 compared to Masthay's 4.

As far as growing into the position, Masthay has probably been punting footballs for over 15 years. How much can he improve?
