lol how does it not make sense? You even said yourself they are starting a ROOKIE QB! Stewart and Goodson are both young and very talented. It would make sense to give your ROOKIE QB a weapon at WR like James Jones to compliment Steve Smith in his aging years.

Because James Jones is nowhere near the overall playmaker that Williams is. That's why I do not see James Jones as enough of a piece to entice the Panthers. Maybe a playmaker that can clearly have an impact - Greg Jennings caliber - I think would entice the Panthers.

Again, I'm do not intend to disagree that Ted might be in interested in Williams should he be available. I do not even totally disregard the possibility that Ted may pull the trigger on such a move, if it were possible.

But I do not think Ted has any say, because I do not see the Panthers willing to trade Williams at all. He is still three years away from being 30 - it's not like he'll be 30 within the next year. He also has been the "top" RB for the past two seasons (not including this season so far), so his body had minimal wear and tear his first couple of years. Moreover, he is entering the final year of his contract indeed, but the Panthers have two advantages from a contractual standpoint: 1) Good RBs are a dime-a-dozen (Williams is not a premium player at his position); and 2) the Panthers have the ability to place the Franchise Tag on Williams and then seek to trade him. Again, I think Carolina has no reason to be in any hurry to move one DeAngelo Williams.

AND, unless I totally read wrong, Patty does not say the Packers are targeting Williams. She says they are targeting a RB who is a top returner (Williams has never been a top one, and has not returned kicks for a few years now) and can catch passes out of the backfield (again, Williams does not fit this either). From her remarks about a #2 RB, it would seem the RB being targeted is the #2 RB on another team. I'm not sure she mentions the Panthers as the team, either.

Patty also confirmed (in a special hidden forum) that Williams is being talked about in a possible deal with the Packers. I also added an update as well (as of 8pm pst).

DeAngelo Williams

for

James Jones and a 3rd/4th/5th rounder.

Doesn't sound that stupid to me.

He's 27, but he's only had two full seasons as a starter.

I can imagine that they'd want to get as much for him as they can. I mean, they have Jonathan Stewart waiting behind him and this team isn't going anywhere this year.

That said, Thompson would have to trade for him. I'd want at least a 2nd if I were the Panthers, I know that much. I don't know how much Jones would do to lower that price. They went pretty receiver happy in the draft last year. Jones could step in as their 2nd or 3rd receiver pretty much immediatly, though, so that would be a plus.

I just don't see it happening.

I think James Jones would be a big addition to the deal. He's percieved as someone who would be a starter on most teams.

Breakdown on Panthers WRs

Steve Smith - One of the most talented guys around
Brandon LaFell - Good physical player, but drops too many passes
David Gettis - Not someone who should start, but has fell into that role now
Dwayne Jarrett - Ultra-bust. Can't get any separation on the field
Armanti Edwards - Has been unable to transition to the WR position properly

Not only do they not have a solid #2, they don't even have a solid #3 in the roster right now.

I know. But the thing is, this is the first year for 3 of those guys. 60% of that group is rookies. If you're trying to unload veterans to get some picks and start rebuilding, if you will, why would you add another veteran? I'd see what LaFell can give me opposite of Smith in a year. See how high Gettis' ceiling will be. Wonder why I drafted Armanti Edwards in the first place.

And then they still have Charly Martin on IR, for what that's worth.

But, yes, on the other side, Jones isn't that old. He's give them someone who they could just slide into a starting spot and have some other guys learn behind him. I doubt that they still have high hopes for Jarrett, like you said, so they could easily make some room for Jones, as well.

I love reading evad's posts.

When I saw just the title of the thread, I got excited. Just thinking of the prospect of having a talented back like Williams brightened me up. No offense to Grant.

What about Lynch? Lynch is a very talented back himself. And is a few years younger than Williams. And probably much more of a possibility with Buffalo's even more crowded backfield.

I'd love to have either one of those two guys. As far as Bush and Slaton...Eh. Nothing about those 2 seems right for us. Bush is a powerful runner, and Slaton is about the complete opposite of that. And neither are nearly as exciting as prospects as the other two.

Also, what's up with the high price for Mike Bush? A second rounder? Is he that valuable?
