Bottom line, alcoholics CHOOSE to be what they are. Most don't make that choice consciously but with their choice to drink without any inhibitions.

So an aids victim chose to be infected too, right?

Nice to know people say 'im going to be an alcoholic' and that's just how easy it is. There's a alcoholic switch right? Just FLIP it on when you wanna be one and flip it off when ya don't. It's that easy, there's no difficulties in it, none at all. It's 100% pure CHOICE!

Did you read my post? AIDS victims choose to be infected in much the same way an alcoholic chooses to be an alcoholic.. By performing the acts which can lead to said abnormality.

If you can't grasp that, then I can't help you. Just continue going on believing that the alcoholics are the victims of their disorder and taking their self discipline out of the equation.

wow. i'm shocked by the drawing of lines in the sand by some of you. kevin has his own experience with his mom, formo has his, i have mine, twinkie has his. each one is very different from the other. each of us has chosen to feel one way or the other about the addiction. i don't think any one of us in particular is absolutely correct or incorrect. i totally understand the bitterness felt by some of you. i choose not to hold onto the hate because it kills ME slowly from inside. the 'wasbund' is who he is. sometimes i feel like he's a piece of dynamite waiting to get lit.

i don't think any one of us in particular is absolutely correct, except TwinkieGorilla, who is always infallibly correct no matter what anybody may possibly think, write or say out-loud to themselves in a fit of utter disbelief and terror. amen.

I think that is an environmental issue that turns into a chemical addiction.

We are the product of our parents but it is up to us to change and improve.

If it is a disease then so is homosexuality (hmmmm, that should spark a few comments)

4Pack, there's not hate or animousity towards any alcoholic from me. I'm not going to say that it's not a hurtful thing I've had to deal with.. That's one of the reasons why I choose not to keep alcohoics in my company, so I don't grow bitter or hateful towards them.

If you can't grasp that, then I can't help you. Just continue going on believing that the alcoholics are the victims of their disorder and taking their self discipline out of the equation.

Here's my take, for what it's worth. Why do some want to call it a disease? because it takes away their personal responsibility for their actions. Fact is, it's a choice to drink. But when you call it a "disease", it then makes it possible to lay the blame elsewhere. "I had no choice! it's a DISEASE!" Is the drive to drink stronger in some then others?
ABSOLUTELY!
The same is for smokers, over eaters, and so on.
If you do thinks that cause you to get "sick", then alot of the blame is on your own shoulders.

I'm still not swayed one way or another because I don't have enough facts to make an informed decision.

However, Cheesey brings up a damn good point.

The statement Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic is not giving them an excuse or removing responsibility for their actions. It's a statement that provides an understanding on how difficult it can be to get/stay sober for some alcoholics. Meaning, it's not as easy as some short minded ignorant people think. Sure on the outside its 'dont pick up the bottle dumbass', but unfortunately it's not that simple.

Everyone is different, there's no cut and dry explanation to it all.

I never gave my own mother an excuse or excused her drinking problem for any of the reasons or excuses she provided. Why the fuck would I give anyone else an excuse?

I understand I don't know every situation, every outcome, all of that. Is it a disease? I don't know. I don't see how aids is a disease if alcoholism isn't. I think you agree with that thought. I can see how some can RELATE it to a disease because of the difficulties you encounter on a daily basis to stay sober.

But as I said, calling alcoholism a disease can't be used as an excuse to drink.
