You're fighting a losing battle here Rockmolder. You are way too objective to discuss politics.

There is no room for objectiveness in politics. If you're a Republican, you are supposed to think that Obama is the dumbest human alive, and he he hates America. If you are a Democrat, you think Obama is the second coming of Jesus Christ. There is no middle ground.

This is why you rarely/never see me participate in political discussions. Its kind of pointless.

Although it would seem that way with alot of how people act in regards to politics in america. There are people out there that dont follow party lines ie me.

I consider myself a democrat yet am Very opposed to the current immigration policy eg let every one in that is south of the border. eg it appears most democrats believe that we should let everyone in - eg I used to love watching bill maher when bush was in office.

But now that obama is in office he appears to be spouting off pure democratic rhetoric including having no border control. And of course uses the argument that our country was founded on immigrants ...

ya sure and britians found their power pre WWII with colonization guess they should go back to that huh? ... time to invade countries

point being - ya I dont find obamas policys living up to what I think a president should be doing. (when did he say the troops would be out?)

and ya I also believe in the death penalty although that can be a tricky one with innocent people in jail.

Our nation has its sins...as every nation does. No need to flaunt them while completely ignoring the many GREAT things that country has afforded the world....like affording Europe, until recently, to play welfare state because America has been providing the majority military deterrent for the continent.

"digsthepack" wrote:

This kind of bothers me. Are we such an insecure nation that we need to flaunt the "GREAT things"? Do we really need a president who talks about "freedom" all the time?
If we ignore the bad things and focus on bragging about the good, we are only going to come off as arrogant, and will never prosper. I'd rather have a critical president than a blowhard one.

My point, is that he should neither have to talk us up, or talk us down. Our record is out there for the world to see, and he need not aplogize or pound his chest about this country. However, since he seems only capable of shining a light on our weaknesses, I begin to question his motives.

This country has nothing to be insecure about, and there is no reason, in my eyes, to tour the world making amends for whatever he feels a need to do so for.

And, cheesey is absolutely correct....the dude can vacation any time, but he chooses to disrespect the military by skipping Arlington at a time when two wars are being faught and soldiers are dying daily?? Yeah...class act!

Is Obama really UnAmerican, or he just an American who sees the country differently than the Born on the 4th of July, Chevrolet, and Apple Pie America that we all grew up in?

Obama is a minority and with that comes a much different perspective on the problems of America. And I for one am not qualified to judge him on this because I don't know what it is like to be a minority.

I think it is poor that he isn't in Arlington this weekend as well, but he is sending Benny the Shark. Obama sends Benny to Israel too, and maybe because he doesn't care for Israel.

How the heck do you figure he is spitting in the face of the military by attending the Lincoln Cemetery vs Arlington? He is still going to speak and honor our fine men and women?

He is doing what most Americans do on the holiday.. visit family and friends.. how totally Un-American.

Some forget that Bush didn't let the worst natural disaster to strike the United States interrupt his vacation.. where is the criticism for that in this thread?

Hammer him for his administrative failures/missteps.. but I fail to see changing the venue as that outrageous.

History proves that many skipped the tradition.. even Reagan for half his term. Another Un-American?

The following comment was recently submitted for Grapevine: "What a travesty that President Obama, who is the commander-in-chief, is going to skip going to Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day. I mean, what an outrage. What a slap in the face to everyone who has served in our military that he would rather go to Chicago for the weekend than go to Arlington National Cemetery. Every president has gone to Arlington National Cemetery and for this president not to do it is just a travesty, just an outrage."

This kind of statement that is designed to evoke the same emotion in readers --self-righteous indignation. And if every word in that commentary was true, it might deserve at least a little bit of outrage. But skeptic that I am, I had to find out how much of it, if any, was true.

Here's what I found out.

It's true that President Obama is planning to spend the holiday weekend in Chicago, where he is scheduled to honor America's fallen heroes with a speech at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery near Chicago.

Vice President Joe Biden will take his traditional place at Arlington.

However, he is far from the first president to be absent from the Arlington ceremony.

President Ronald Reagan skipped Arlington on Memorial Day on four of his eight years in office, sending various substitutes in his place.

President H.W. Bush, who was a World War II veteran, did not attend the Arlington Cemetery ceremony at all while he was president; he spent three of them vacationing in Kennebunkport, Maine, while Vice President Dan Quayle laid the wreath.

And President George W. Bush was out of the country on Memorial Day 2002.

Given this information, it is clear President Obama not only is not the first to break with tradition, but is, in fact, following in the footsteps of some of his more recent Republican predecessors.

President Clinton, a Democrat, is the only president in three decades who never missed a Memorial Day wreath-laying at Arlington.

Save your outrage for something else President Obama has done (or failed to do) -- or bestow it equally on all the presidents who broke with this time-honored tradition, including Reagan, Bush and Bush.

On Monday, Obama will make remarks at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, south of Chicago - missing the usual tradition of presidents speaking at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day.

"Rockmolder" wrote:

So he's bad because he speaks at a different cemetery? Because he's in Chicago, rather than in Texas, he's un-American? Do you live in Houston, wear cowboy boots, drive around in a Hummer and shoot at gays, Dhazer?

LOL I can not believe no one else picked up on this... I forgive ROCK though. he lives in the Netherlands.

ROCK. Arlington is in Texas. And it is the home of the Texas Rangers...

But, er, however... They were talking about Arlington National Cemetery The Holy Grail of military Cemetery's and it is in Washington. Not Texas.

It is VERY HOLY to me my friend. I spent a full day there twice.

Mind you, I have visited CMH tombstones in many states. Arlington alone is the holy grail on sheer numbers.
